Carvin GS12-75 vs Eminence Wizard

After almost 3 months of owning the Carvin, here's my mini review:

It was stiff initially. I could tell by playing higher notes on the low e string, nevertheless it's more open and louder now. I would describe the overall tone as relatively scooped sounding (compared to the stock speaker in my 112 Laney combo).

Clean sound wise, it sounds beautiful with my Tele and Strat. I've discovered new sweet spots and new room for displaying subtle hand dynamics when playing. With my bucker guitars I'm still finding the sweet spots. Keeping the bass really low seems to help foir buckers.

Come overdriven sound (basically Led Zep to Darkness to Smashing Pumpkins heavy), it sounds much better now than initially. Still too loud for me , so I use pedals mainly. I usually jack up the mids to make up for the lack of it. At first I wasnt too fond of it but now I realise that a scooped speaker is probably more versatile and practical than a middy one. In conclusion, it's way beyond a bang-for-buck speaker.

Anyway, the main point of this thread is I'm thinking of trying out a Wizard. So I'm curious about how it sounds and how much they differ greatly tonally compared to this Carvin.

Thanks.

What model Carvin are you using? I haven't used the Wizard, so I can't speak to that. However, I found that in my Carvin (Belair), the best thing I did with it was to replace the Carvin spkr. The OD improved greatly. In my case, I went from a Carvin spkr to a Vin 30. The Carvin spk was, I think, the GS-12, more of a "vintage" application spkr. Fine for the cleans, crummy for the "soak" channel. The Vin 30 has really improved the soak channel. BTW, Carvin is shipping their amps w/Celestions these days.

Cal, what is the Laney 112 in question?

Was the stock speaker the H&H?

I can speak more about the Emi Wizard knowing the amp and speaker.

I cannot speak for the Carvin.

Its a Laney AOR Series 2 50W 112 combo.

It's second hand and the original HH was replaced with a cheapo speaker. Hence the change.

It's one heck of a loud amp and does a nice British crunch sound. Cleans are not Fender-like but still very nice.
