Does anyone have or used a carvin V3? Does it have good sound and is it reliable? Would it be compareable to mesa or marshall amps?

Hit the search feature and look for my post on the V3. This amp is absolutely amazing!

If you have not already, check out www.carvinbbs.com. In the amp forum there are threads with various sound clips. Although the forum members say it sounds different, it is still closer to a Mesa Rec than a Marshall.

I have one. I just swapped out the stock tubes for some JJ 12AX7's and KT-77 tubes and rebiased it. Sounds unbeleivable, and untra versatile.

As far as marshall tones, you'll get hot rodded Marshall toneslike '80's Ratt, Jake E. Lee. It is closer to a mesa Rec than a Marshall- I have a Marshall JCM800 to compare it with. It's got a EQ switch that will boost the highs and lows on the EQ channels to get more of a Mesa Rec tone. Classic Marshall tones are in there, you just have to adjust all the various controls.

Does anyone know how the combo v3 compares to the head?

Same amp. I'm currenty running my V3 through the speakers of my Marshall JCM800 2x12 combo, which has the same Celestion speakers that the V3 combo has (the GT-75, but I think there's a Vin30 option). It sounds great...

I got the head just so I could break up the amp and transport it easier, and get a different cab in the futre. I just don't have room in my car for the combo.

The amp has tone controls in the master section that let you emulate a 4x12 stack if you're only playing it through a 2x12.

Anyway, the difference between the head and combo is just a personal preference. You save some money by buying the combo if you don't already have a cab.
