Carving DC400 gets a Pearly Gates and a JB!

Last Saturday night I had a few free hours, so I dug out my old Carvin DC400. This is a great, solid Koa guitar that is beautiful and only finished in Tung Oil, so it feels luxurious. I have owned it for years but have never been satisfied with its electric tones. With its through-neck design and ebony fingerboard, it has excellent sustain and rings strong and true all over the two octave neck. To my best recollection, I have tried at least 5 different sets of pickups in it and never really bonded well with any of them. I have tried two different sets of Carvin pickups, and 2 sets Gibson humbuckers ('57 Classics & Burstbucker Pros). I even put in a set of Jim Wagner's WCR pickups (a Godwood & a Darkburst). Then I tried a set of GFS Retrotron Hot Nashville pups in there, just to try something completely different. That combination almost sold me and they lasted in there for about a year, but the longing for something else was still there.

So last Saturday I got out the soldering station and my box of extra pickups. After rummaging around for awhile, I settled on a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates SH-PG1n for the neck, and a SH-4 JB model in the bridge. At first it seemed like a fairly pedestrian choice, but the combination of the two has come out very nice. I have had a few evenings this week to wring it out, and I may have finally found the right combination for this chunk of wood. The Pearly Gates produces some great cleans and when pushed it can do your Clapton woman tones with not problem. The JB at the bridge, being fairly overwound does the cutting edge stuff, and when asked to it produces screaming yowls that make zombies tremble. When blended and used together, they produce a wonderful range of tones. Just changing the volumes of either pickup yields some nice variations in color.

I also wired coil splits for both pickups (since the switches were already there), and those opened up another realm of tones for this plank. Just cutting a coil from either one lightens the impact and should let the guitar sit nicely in the band mix. Using them both as a single coil produces a very Strat-like personality which was a very pleasant surprise.

At any rate, so far I am pleased with this installation, but the real test will be when I play this guitar with the band and that won't be until Thursday evening.

Stay tuned, Stan

Beautiful guitar!

I had a JB in my DC127T years ago, but it was *way* too aggressive. Mine is all maple with an ebony fingerboard, though.

Thanks! Yeah, that's why I had that JB sitting in the box for years, waiting for an opportunity. But I tried it in this guitar, and maybe it's the Koa and Ebony woods, but these two pups are working great together.

That looks so much classier than current production Kiesel guitars.

Gorgeous wood. Glad you got her dialed in. It would be a shame for that to sit in a closet.

Re: Carving DC400 gets a Pearly Gates and a JB!

You know, I don't see this combo mentioned often. But I'd think PG/JB should be an excellent pair....

Re: Carving DC400 gets a Pearly Gates and a JB!

Yeah, I haven't been here that long, but I don't remember anyone here discussing the PG/JB combo before either. Well, they complement each other very well. I got to work out on the DC400 this weekend with the band and was very impressed with it on each song. At long last, this nice chunk of wood will now contend with my usual favorites for a share of stage time.

Next project will be her sister. I also have a DC150 in Koa, and that one is an HSS. I've tried several pickup sets in that one and have yet to be satisfied. I don't know if it's just me or that big chunk of Koa wood, but I've been struggling with these two on and off for years. Any suggestions would be welcome.

First off I will assume you have removed the active module from the old Carvin and are not wiring into the board on them. I have a Ruby quilt 02 DC 400 I'm trying to decide what I am about to drop in with the actives FYI. Will get a Sentient neck for sure but deciding if the bridge will be a Perpetual Burn or a Hybrid.

Have a 93 KOA DC 127 and have had 2 Duncans in the bridge I really liked and a Sentient in the neck.
Started out with an Alt 8 in the bridge and REALLY liked that combo. However kinda wanted a more versatile and lower gain bridge so went with a 59/Custom Hybrid. AMAZING split with the Sentient well balanced good sounding set up but the explosive tones of that Alt in this guitar haunted me so swapped the Hybrid for the Alt and this time I will leave it alone!
Here is the Alt /Sentient combo in the KOA DC 127 live through my little Subway Rocket.

Same rig set up same guitar live running more laid back and using both pickups more. The Sentient /Alt 8 combo is a flat killer in this old KOA Carvin!!
The old DC as I got her.

Some not all as they still do classy simple guitars like my 17 Kiesel DC with a Zebra Perpetual Burn in the Bridge. I do agree on some of those nutty butt ugly things they are now building though! Some of those "high end tops" i swear look like some one puked on them!

Whats the single coils in the other guitar? Have a pair of stock AP 11's in my 17 Kiesel with the Perpet in the bridge and that combo is just fantastic!!
Here she is with my PRS MT 15

Re: Carving DC400 gets a Pearly Gates and a JB!

Yup, the DC150 came stock with the AP 11s but eventually I wanted to do something different so I put in a pair of Lace Sensor Golds. And those didn't sound as good to me as they do in one of my Strats. I still have an old Carvin Bolt-T HSS that remains stock and sounds great just as it is.

Nice links, brother!

Sheesh, I just noticed that I couldn't even spell Carvin right in this thread's title (faceplant).
