Celestion alnico blue rating. Help!

Re: Celestion alnico blue rating. Help!

strictly speaking, a speaker is supposed top be double the wattge of your amp. This is for stuff like Classic Metal through Marshalls.
As long as you don't go ballistic with downtuned Drone at volume 11, you 'll be just fine. Watch it with the balls out Heavy Metal, but for clean-ish Fender style stuff thats gets way too bright anyway turned up too loud, you shouldn't have any issues.

a buddy of mine put a 50 watt Cannabis Rex in a 65 watt Bandit

it may blat out or damage the speaker at max volume

but if you don't go up that high you should be good

Re: Celestion alnico blue rating. Help!

It's a weak 20 watts that sounds mean and smooth when cranked. If it was a weber, I know it could handle it. I've never used a Celestion in this fashion before.

Re: Celestion alnico blue rating. Help!

yeah, IMO, you should weigh your options. They say the Blue Celestion is the best sounding modern speaker, thats still in production, in existence. I know they put one in a 15 watt Vox ( AC15). Thats why I think, again, unless you unleash the freakin' fury on it, you should be okay.
Listen to the speaker- if it shows signs of stress like flubbing out uncontrollably, then you may want to consider either a 50 watt Celestion 'Gold' ( a higher powered-50 watt- Celestion 'Blue' that probably doesn't quite sound as good), or a Eminence 'Red Fang'- also a 50 watt speaker...a great speaker, but again, probably not as nice sounding as the Blue.

No metal.... The amp does early zz top all day, and it does sound great cranked. I can get the speaker for a very good deal, so I am trying desperately to find an excuse to use it.

Re: Celestion alnico blue rating. Help!

It will work if you don't crank the volume too high. Or you can get a Celestion Gold - very nice speakers that are supposed to sound like already broken in Blues, with the benefit of being 50W each.

Re: Celestion alnico blue rating. Help!

Another option is the 30 watt Weber version of the Blue. Then you'd not have to worry as much about blowing it.

Re: Celestion alnico blue rating. Help!

I think the whole point of a brownface Deluxe is to crank it up to get that brownface ZZ Top grind. At that point, I wouldn't be surprised if the amp actually makes a bit more than 20 watts. Sounds to me like a good way to destroy a very expensive speaker.

If you can trust yourself to keep the amp volume below say, 5 at all times than go for it. But if you're looking for the grind, you need more speaker than amp.

Re: Celestion alnico blue rating. Help!

Yes. And yes. My first choice would be a weber, but since I'm getting a good deal I'm waiting for someone to tell me that this is a great idea and I won't blow up an expensive speaker;) but... Since I can't let a good deal go, my new idea is to put it in my empty 4x12, get another blue, and begin finding some speakers to mix with it. Thank you for your help, gentlemen!

Re: Celestion alnico blue rating. Help!

The speaker is rated by celestion at 15 watts so whatever we say here is redundant.
If you operate a speaker outside its design ratings then the risk is your own.

Re: Celestion alnico blue rating. Help!

blues do sound great, albeit bright. i dont care for the gold. if you can get a really good deal on one then do it. i dont know if id put it in your brown deluxe though, if you crank the amp youre gonna lose the speaker

Re: Celestion alnico blue rating. Help!

I used to have a '62 Brown Deluxe, and it had a vintage Vox Alnico in it that my friend had installed. Sounded awesome, and worked fine. I assume it was a 15 watter, but not sure. I just know the amp just screamed and sounded great. Stupidly traded it away at some point (Doh!...).

wasnt sure if it was a mistake or there was some magic amp i should go check out. i do love a brown deluxe!

watching old clips of billy playing one and getting great tones makes me want one

Re: Celestion alnico blue rating. Help!

I killed a 68 silver frame Alnico G 12 with my 62 Deluxe.

If newer ones are more robust you might be ok but if I were you I'd go for a higher wattage version from Celestion or Weber.

Re: Celestion alnico blue rating. Help!

AC30s can go above 33 watts and work fine with two blues but they don't have much low end which is a big factor in destroying speakers (why you don't play bass through small guitar speakers). I'd go with a gold or a WGS or Weber just to be sure so you don't blow anything.
