Celestion Blue tone in a Deluxe Reverb without the $$$$ SLAM?

I'm trying to keep it real with my DRRI. I'm willing to try some new sounds since i have some cash in my pocket. Why not try a nice, complex sounding speaker like the G12 Alnico for a change. Do any other manufacturers come close in a ceramic format for a similar kind of tone? Have any of you tried them?

Oh and by the way, i plan on pulling out my WS1 Solid state copper cap replacement and putting a 5AR4 rated copper cap in there for the right plate voltages for a Deluxe. Just trying to keep it sounding how it's supposed to, eventhough i like how it sounds with or without the SS replacement. (I like the amp how it sounds as is and have taken it to countless rehearsals and gigs, but I'm just venturing a bit)

An alnico speaker is not gonna have the tight bottom or headroom I think you might be wanting not to mention a Celestion Blue won't last long in a DRRI...those speakers are only rated at 15 watts.

The best speaker IMO for a DR is a G12H30 which is ceramic for tight bottom an headroom, rated at 30 watts which is fine and is al 10db efficent which will make it seem pretty damn loud...FWIW, thats the speaker I would suggest for that amp, and I also want to say that goping back to a GZ34 is a great idea!

If you are hung up on the Celestion Blue there is a Weber version of it...the Weber Blue Dog comes in 15, 30 and 50 watts and there is also an Eminence clone of it...I belive it's the Red Fang and I know it is rated higher than 15 watts but thats really all I know about it...

Do yourself a favor and get a G12H30 and call it a day...if you don't like you'd be the first!

So i got 3 choices- Red Fang, G12H30, and Blue dog in varying wattages.

Price, and quality are clearly the two issues. I like weber because they're handmade and simply badass speakers (i own a california 15 for my blonde bandmaster) I like the Celestion, simply because it's a tried and true badass tone, but i suspect i'd lose alot of 'fenderness'. Red Fang would be like a budget alnico blue dog, but i like it's specs ALOT

IYO, what would be the difference between the G12H30 and a 30 watt ceramic blue dog?

Thanks for answering all of my ridiculous questions! You're like my tone shrink or something, but it's rough 'ballparking' the tones of a bunch of speakers you've never played through!

I think even Lew suggested the same, a G12H30 for the Deluxe Reverb, and between Christian and Lew, I'd just do it and not question it. They already did the $$$ Slam so you don't have to!

Well, you have as many choices as you can find! That said Im gonna be hoenst...I wouldn'teven bother with an Alnico speaker in that amp...muich less a Celestion Blue type speaker...you might like it just fine but IMO there are better speakers out there for that amp.

I would go with the G12H30...it has the extra bottom end that a 1x12 often needs, it has the ceramic magnet that will keep the amp clean and tight on the bottom and it is efficent enough to make the map seem louder w/o runing the tone. As for loosing some "Fenderiness" don't bet on it! A Celestion in a Fender amp can be a beautiful thing...it will fill out the mids a tad more than the Jensen but it won't make your Deluxe sound like a Marshall or anything...just a good Fender!

As for the Ceramic 30 watt Blue Dog VS a G12H30 I can't say I've ever comparred them head to head but expect them to be quite different...Ted does make a G12H30 clone if that really interests you.

There is no substitute for the Celestion Alnico Blue unfortunately. I've owned two Weber Blue Dogs before and they aren't the same. There are plenty of great speakers out there and I agree with Christian, the G12H30 would be a good one for that amp.

Don't forget to look into the Eminence Wizard before you pull the trigger on the G12H30.

i use a cannabis rex in my dr and i think it sounds fabulous. i use the g12h in another amp so i wanted something different but it does match the amp very well.

+1 on the Cannabis Rex. I have it in my 40 watt blackface rev style amp I built and I think it's very very smooooooth

I also put a Mojo greenback clone into a 5E3 and was impressed with the tone.

Has anyone tried the Axiom series from Fane? They have Alnico's with 101db.

so G12H30......or .....Vintage 30???? which will have more headroom? Remember, i dont just play blues or distorted rhythms, it needs to get good clean funk tones and hold it's clean for the most part.

The Vintage 30 is rated at 60 watts vs the G12H30's 30 watts but the G12H30 sounds much fuller in a single 12/open back combo...

so you all recommend that i abandon a jensen like tone completely? There wouldn't be any other Weber Vintage Series type speakers like the 12F150 that would get a better "Deluxe Reverb Sound", or are the G12H30's simply so much more toneful that i should just get them already?

Personally I prefer Webers to the reissue Jensens...I have owned several old/real Jensens and most of the reissues just don't sound right to me BUT I still think that a G12H30 is the best speaker for a DR out there...an old Jensen or Oxford is "correct" and a lot of guys out there do really like them but IMO the Celestion really makes that amp...

i took the stock speaker out of my '66 dr and put in the rex and havent looked back. you really want an efficient speaker in that amp and many jensens arent. the v30 can sound a little weak in an openbacked cab and the g12h can sound nice clean too, not just for dirty.

ok, here's my gameplan. I'm going to bag a G12h30 and try it out in the amp. If it's not my bag, i'll get another similar 12 inch speaker and put it in my 2x12 cab and use that for my blonde bandmaster that is overdue for repair.

So decent cleans even at higher volumes? I'll take your word for it, team!
