Ceramic in a JB

Has anyone put a ceramic magnet in JB? I had a few unidentified magnets laying around from various pickup swaps I did a year or so ago and I put one in a JB and now have this big hot sound similar to a Duncan Distortion but a little more natural sounding and a less compressed. I'm trying to figure out if it's a ceramic mag that I put in. For anyone who's tried this combination, does this sound like a ceramic I put in?

Thanks!

the Distortion and JB have the same coils, just different magnets. The ceramic magnet in the DD is a little thicker than the typical ceramic magnet but a JB with a regular ceramic mag should be almost identical to a distortion.

less compression and more open sounding describes an A8 mag moreso than a ceramic . . . did the magnet you put in the JB seem physically lighter in weight than a typical alnico magnet?

Re: Ceramic in a JB

I think you helped me nail it. I think the sound difference comes from the guitar it's in; otherwise it sounds just like the Distortion. Also I just opened up a Duncan Custom I have laying around and found an A3 magnet that I swapped in, so I think it's the Custom's ceramic that I put in the JB. Thanks man.

Re: Ceramic in a JB

that's quite the monster pickup in your avatar, RiffGuy...I'd hate to see the thickness of the lowest B string on that puppy.....not to mention the huge neck for 12 strings - the weight of the neck alone would tear your shoulders up!

Re: Ceramic in a JB

The JB with a normal ceramic is what we call the JB+ or Distortion Lite. I think if people that criticised the DD but rave about the stock JB would probably really really like this JB+.

I love the DD and pretty much hate the JB with alnico 5 but if I had to rate the pickups as far as a 1-10 score for overall likeness it would be:

Duncan Distortion (10)
JB+ (9)
Stock JB (4)

Yeah, the guitar that houses the "Longbucker" is quite the bear.:eyecrazy:

I think I'm a fan of the JB+. I think Distortion Light is a good way to describe it. I'll be messing around with it quite a bit for the time being.

yeah it's amazing how the JB coils respond to different magnets . . . I'm a fan of the A2 JB myself. like the Custom series, swapping mags in a JB makes it a whole new pickup.

I've noticed less of a difference in the 59, PG, and Jazz with magnet swaps for whatever reason. maybe the difference is more noticeable with higher output pups.

Re: Ceramic in a JB

I have tried both small and big ceramic in the JB. The difference is pretty small actually. Of course the big one has a little more momentum, but it's the same character of pickup.

Re: Ceramic in a JB

Hi, i did the ceramic JB too. But i liked the JB8 more: more open, less compressed, warm alnico highs but less bass chunk (thats okay with me!!)

Re: Ceramic in a JB

I tried the a ceramic in a JB a while ago, but changed back to the A5. It's been so long and I recall loving the way chords sounded, but I can't remember the lead tones.

Yup! I just turned my latest JB into a JB8 last night. World's better than the A5. The A2 is nice in the JB, too, but the A8 just fits me better.

How did the JB sound with the A2?
