Ceramic or Alnico?

Re: Ceramic or Alnico?

i like alnico V, but i really want to hear some of the other, lesser known kind of magnets, like Neodymium (used in microphones) and something called Alnico VIII. Fender has these new Samarium-Cobalt things, i wanna hear what those are like. htey're supposed to be quieter than even humbuckers.

Re: Ceramic or Alnico?

Alnico V for the most part. I like Ceramic magnet bridge humbuckers sometimes though like the Custom or Distortion, big fan of the '59 and JB right now though.

Re: Ceramic or Alnico?

Ceramic is great for some things....that's what is in my custom shop bitchbucker bridge....it is nice to combine that with a different magnet in the neck though, the Alnico V in the neck bitchbucker is a little warmer and less harsh. The contrast can be cool. It all depends on what you are playing though.

Re: Ceramic or Alnico?

It depends on the guitar and what I want. In a really bright guitar, I'll use Alnico 2 or Alnico 3. In a warmer guitar that's not as snappy or bright, I'll use Alnico 5.

Alnico V and II, I just find ceramic too harsh for my taste.

yep. cept i havent got any guitars with A2's to my knowledge, but i've played guitars with a custom custom in and i liked it.

i tried the custom its a good pup but a bit harsh for me

Re: Ceramic or Alnico?

I´ve just put an a4 magnet in a 59b and installed it in my Gretsch Roc Jet. Not many people put a SD in these Gretsches anyways but to be honest, I really like A4 magnets in these kind of guitars now.

Re: Ceramic or Alnico?

i have the samarium cobalt noiseless in my strat...theyre good but they lack punch in many frequencies, and distort very softly..too soft for my tastes. I don't play metal or hard rock, and they're still a bit too soft. im taking them out for ant II surfers.

What exactly are these bitchbuckers comprised of? nice name though lol

Re: Ceramic or Alnico?

Alnivo V just because it's less harsh than ceramics, and because I find that they age more gracefully.

Re: Ceramic or Alnico?

Buy some mags...
Ceramics can be replaced by alnicos with a popsicle stick spacer...
Who's got mags? Ask.

Re: Ceramic or Alnico?

ceramics I find are to harsh and icepicky not good for clean stuff, but they sound good split cause theyve got lots of output great with lots of distortion. Alnicos are much smoother and more controllable i prefer them.
