I have a neck humbucker thats just too dark. With A5 it's almost bright/clear enough but still no cigar. Will ceramic add further clarity? If not is there anything tat will?

Re: ceramic vs A5?

Here ya go dude. Sure it's the bridge pickups, but the same kind of idea in the differences you'll hear after you change magnets or swap pickups regardless.

To answer your question, it depends what you mean by "clarity". Sorry for the mini rant but I frankly can't stand the use of that word when talking about things like the tone of an instrument, especially because (in the scheme of things) it's rather vague and something every company/maker will boast about regarding any sound related product of theirs. No one in their right mind would sell something that they themselves would label as "unclear" right? So whenever I read the word "clarity", I almost disregard it completely because of how little it tells me. It is a word of general quality when everything is subjective really, and there are many different types of clarity.

If by further clarity you mean further output and treble response resulting in a brighter and louder tone, then yes, absolutely it will produce more of that but also a more aggressive and quick responding bass.

I'd almost be tempted to go A3, mainly as the bass response of A5 often leads to it being muddy.

Re: ceramic vs A5?

A3 is an option, as is A4.

Back to the clarity rant. I agree that tone is very subjective and in the ear of the beholder. A lot of times, I think clarity can be the antithesis of compression. Like how some PAFs can sound more clear than a modern hot rod. Some, not all....as there are always exceptions. BKPs are commonly seen as having a little more clarity as a byproduct of being scatter wound. I know that my CS scatter wound JB is a little more open sounding than a production model, which some could see as having more clarity. So maybe looking at it as more notes being heard more clearly, or more string separation?

Re: ceramic vs A5?

Wire the humbucker in parallel. That will reduce the volume slightly, and make it brighter.

Re: ceramic vs A5?

What pickup are we talking about here? I know around here people like to talk about magnets like they are the only thing that causes a tonal shift but thats just not true. If your working with a naturally dark wind you might just be urinating into the wind trying to brighten it with just the mag.

Re: ceramic vs A5?

not the only thing, but come on, it does make a pretty big difference.

I didnt say it didnt but we do get very mag focused around here and my point still stands maybe the wind hes got is just too dark and hes spinning his wheels trying to swap mags.... Its just a suggestion. Seems silly to be calling out mag suggestions without even knowing the pickup or guitar its going into.

Re: ceramic vs A5?

*shrug* ime, all other things being equal, A3s and A4s always have more less boominess and more articulation than A5s.
