hello
just for users:)

can you tell me your factory settings?

what is the height of your pickups? sh1-sh4

your pickups height when you press the 12th fret from the pickup (above the metal piece) to the string:9:

and what is your action ? at the 12th fret for the E string and the e string

Re: Charvel san dimas users, pickups and action

Mind if I ask what makes San Dimas setups so esoteric that you feel the need to ask only the owners of that specific guitar model to give you subjective setups and measurements?

At the risk of sounding vague, I'd say that you should adjust to taste. First the action, THEN the pickups, THEN the pickup pole pieces. The sound a pickup produces (for lack of a better word) is related to the distance between the pickup and the string. Thus, you should adjust the string to a comfortable height before you fiddle around with pickups.

Most of the time, I see people adjust the pickup by fretting the 12th fret and giving a 3mm clearance between the BRIDGE pickup pole and the low E string, then they adjust the neck pickup to match the bridge's volume.

Re: Charvel san dimas users, pickups and action

i only want to know if the factory settings (they may be weird) are the same for all
that's all
for example, the bridge pickup seems to be high and he strings too
i only notice 1mm for the sh4 : strange

i read that the guitar was set up before going to shops (for trussroad)

my question is about the action in 9-42 too

In short, NO, not everyone is going to set up their guitars to factory specs. Players set up their guitars to personal taste. You can ask, but you'll get a bunch of different answers that won't be of any help to you because how I like my charvels set up is probably not going to be the way you like your charvels set up

Not necessarily going to happen the way you want. No one measures the guitar's setup before adjusting it to taste. Furthermore, the store you bought it from would most likely adjusted the setup to store standard as well. Apart from the truss rod, that is. I don't think the shops would bother adjust that.

Re: Charvel san dimas users, pickups and action

He's asking of the factory setups are the same.

They're all within a given tolerance, as are all guitars by all manufacturers, to a certain guideline established by each manufacturer. Some players find factory setups too low, while others would think the action was too high on the exact same guitar, and still others would think it was perfect. This is why factory setups are standardized. However, due to production schedules, they can only get close enough to be similar, and no two will be identical. The difference between 1mm and 3mm when looking at a ruler is only the 2mm mark, so if the setup spec tells the laborer to set it to 2mm, they can go down to 1mm or up to 3mm and still be within the 1mm tolerance. If they set the pickup height off the face of the guitar to that, then they have a rough estimate of how low to set the action from the top of the pickup, rather than worrying about measuring it off the neck.

As well, necks adjust themselves to their climate, so the same guitar shipped to someone in Boston might find their neck bent forward whereas someone in Florida might find the same neck bowed backwards.

Pickups need to be set level in order to cancel hum properly?!?! Who made that up?

Edit - hum, him... Autocorrect says "whatever"

Re: Charvel san dimas users, pickups and action

i found this manuel
1,5mm and 1,5mm ok

but the tech gives me another settings :
E string 1,59mm 12th fret = 4/64"
e string 1,19mm = 3/64"

and my guitar has 2mm / 1,5mm approximatively

and with a little paper, they have written : 1,8mm
1,3 mm

but no problem
i just changed the strings, with springs settings to be perfect with the floyd rose (to the right and to the left, 100%pushed)

ok thanks:)

i noticed a sh4 close to the strings too
(strange for sustain)
sh1 maybe too
