Cheap amp but great breakup. .

Doesn't matter if its solid state or tubes. What do you see as being the best bargain out there for an excellent thick crunchy peanut butter? ( amp )

Re: Cheap amp but great breakup. .

The old fuzzy Randalls. The RG100 head or even the RG75 combo (George Lynch used one of those). Best sound I've ever heard from a less expensive amp. In fact I have a rare amp that has the exact design as those old Randalls but from a different company when they bough them out and I use it in tandem with my more expensive tube amps, it's always going to have a place for me.

Re: Cheap amp but great breakup. .

The vox pathfinders can be found cheap ($60 -$80) and sound really really good. I really like those little things.

Re: Cheap amp but great breakup. .

Fender Bassman head. Jump the channels, turn both volumes up to 8, tones to taste, and let it rip. Did just that at jam session the other day - holy **** what a sound.

Re: Cheap amp but great breakup. .

My Polytone Mini Brute III / IV / V / M-PA is just plane kick you in the balls bad ass sounding .

It's three separate channels all have a :
Polytone03.jpg

Gain control , bass , treble , reverb pots and three eq switch positions , and it's got two EQs on the master out .

It's sweet clean -n- brite for my PBass - dark-n-deep - nasty or clean for harp or guitar ( electric or acoustic electric ) and warm and clean for my vocals and - - -

All in one sweet lightweight package w/100 Watts RMS .

All SS and eat yer hearts out too heh heh I got it at a second hand shop for about $18.00 . It was made in the late 60s to early 70s .

Sports 2 cabs each with a single 12" and 8" drivers .
Polytone04.jpg

Also a real Hammond B3 spring reverb .

Low amp noise too for an oldie , but that's SS for you and I like it . It's been working for me about two years now with no problems at all .

I just used it on the first for my mum's 90th. B-day party to help re enforce the sound of the vocals and acoustic instruments ( 5 piece Mariachi Band )

Moms90thWithMariachis.jpg

That played there at the party and then doubled up two more hours for the Rock-N-Roll-Billy I played for and other two hours for vocals for Chan Romero my main man .

Great amp for many uses . Bet that jam was cool too .

The bad boys of harp players love Bassmans with 4X10" for the smooth sweet

William Clarke :

A little sweet-n-nasty

And then there's nasty

Paul Butterfield :

When I have the right personal I rip this bigtime :)

When I do Mojo I do Muddy's version and I do it Paul's way on harp ( really is there a better arrangement - I think not ) too , 10 years to really nail Paul's style it took me .

The Nastiest

paul butterfield-vocal/hca
mike bloomfield-guitar
elvin bishop-guitar
jerome arnold-bass
sam lay-drums
bruce langhorne-tamborine

The vibrato in his harp sound is all tongue , - ¡ man it's all tongue ! , it's what inspired many an FX pedal I bet .

I do this song and I tongue the hell out of too .

These guys almost always used Bassmans and occasional Twin Reverbs - & Vibro Champs .

Good sound is good!

Old Peavey Transtubes in the first or second series were particulalrly excellent in all kinds of ways, particularly at the gritty in-between clean and meltdown tones.

This.

When I first started playing guitar I bought one of these on recommendation by Sam Ash staff. I think they were actually more expensive back 10 years ago, like the $150 mark. I had an inappropriate guitar and remember plugging in all sorts of stomp boxes trying to make the most of it without understanding pedal chains or noise canceling.

Eventually I sold it because I was a s#itty player and thought I could benefit from tube combos.

And now I want another one. They work incredibly well with a pedal board.

Though my main amp gigging or studio is a Vox Valvetronix VT20+
Those things kick all sorts of ass.

the funny things about those amps is that usually I can get a good clean sound or heavy sound out of most modern ss amps but that one easily excelled in the break up areas.

Re: Cheap amp but great breakup. .

Crate Palomino amps have great buttery overdriven secksiness ... I use a V16 as my backup amp... most can be had used for less than $200

Re: Cheap amp but great breakup. .

^^

Oh the irony. I actually sold my Pathfinder to buy a Palomino 30. At the time my buddy was playing a Traynor YCV50 and I was uber jealous.

Well, I can say that while the Palomino is an amazing class A and works fantastic with OD and Distortion pedals, it is loud as all frak. The amp pretty much starts on volume 8 or 9. Great for live gigs, not for bedroom practice.

I own an Rg75 and I must say it gets some really good tones out of it. i paid like 200 bucks off ebay for it.

Re: Cheap amp but great breakup. .

I use a BF Bandmaster as my main amp, but that's how I set it up. Jumper the channels, and roll all of the knobs to ten. Sometimes eight on the volume. It's a good sound for sure.

My backup is a Classic 50. Great bang for the buck.

Yeah, cranked BF Fenders are a thing of beauty. I was playing mine through a Sovtek 4x12 loaded with some Celestions from the 40's. **** was rockin yo

Re: Cheap amp but great breakup. .

As a solid state guy , I absolutely love the old Fender Champion 110 and my recently acquired, Champion 30 . I also have a Crate GX-80 which has a Celestion G-12 but there's something to be said about those old SS Fenders from the late 80's / early 1990's . My champion 110 already has a Eminence Rajun Cajun 10" installed in it and I'll be doing the same for my Champion 30 as well. Both of these amps at 25 and 30 watts respectively, are plenty loud enough for small gigs and sound great.

Re: Cheap amp but great breakup. .

I know people are down on VHT because it was sold, but the Special 6 is a great little all-tube combo that gets a wide range of breakup at low volume. You can get the top of the line Ultra model w/12" speaker, footswitch for $299 on Amazon. The lower model 6's are less.

Paging Dr Kevlar3000... Please report to this thread.

LOL

Lol... I gotta go with the old SS PV Standard head from the early, mid 70s. I friend in town bought one on my advice, he came over and we cranked mine and his up, then played all the big loud tube monsters I have, and he too believed the hype... The freakin rock with some volume attached to em

+1 on the special 6, you could probably find a used one even cheaper. The Special 6 Ultra is extra awesome, adds a gain channel, effects loop (I believe tube powered?), and line out to the normal special 6 as well as the bigger speaker. It's a pretty great bargain.

Re: Cheap amp but great breakup. .

+1 on the special 6 ultra. Lot's of nice tones in there once you spend a little time getting to know it. Best value around IMO.

Re: Cheap amp but great breakup. .

How does the pathfinder compare to the valvetronix? I have VT15 but am curious about the pathfinders.

I enjoyed a honeymoon with the VHT special 6 but found it to be a bit of a one trick pony after some time. Never tried the ultra
