Cheap Blues Amp

Hi guys, I need to replace My 1998 Fender HotRod Deluxe amp as it has gone to meet Leo, I am playing out more thanks to the recession, and I need a small tube amp on the cheap, I'm looking at the Epiphone Valve Jr, the Fender Pro Jr, I play Blues, Blues-Rock. I like the Epi as there are alot of mods, and as I have more freetime Modding might be fun, so any feed-back is welcome. Tube Amps only as I dont use effects:)

Re: Cheap Blues Amp

id try and pick up a second hand blues jnr. great little amps as they are and a lot of mods can be done to make them even better. These are the industry standard blues jnr mods http://billmaudio.com/wp/

i personally do not like the bias cooling mod though. The rest are killer.

Re: Cheap Blues Amp

I also gotta put a plug in for a blues Jr. I believe my night train trounces it thoroughly for rock but the blues Jr (I played an NOS one) just has this warmth that is made for fender instruments.
My strat wants a blues jr.

Re: Cheap Blues Amp

It is hard to beat a used blues jr. Used Peavey c-30 is another option. Used AC15CC possibly.

Re: Cheap Blues Amp

If you get the chance check out a used Laney VC30 preferably the 2 x 10 combo. A lot of amp for not too much money. Somewhere in the ballpark of a Peavey Classic 30 but a much better sounding amp (not that the Peaveys are bad).

Re: Cheap Blues Amp

Blues or Pro Jr, PV Classic 30.

Sometimes you can find a "red knob" Fender for cheap. I picked up a Bandmaster Super 60 for $US300 a couple of years ago (1x12 60 watts). That one may have a bit too much headroom, though, for a decent bluesy overdrive at reasonable volume w/o a pedal.

Re: Cheap Blues Amp

Id say PV Classic 30 too. I compared both before I bought my 30 and the 30 was quieter, less money and had a couple of other points that I felt were favorable.

Re: Cheap Blues Amp

I would go after an old late 60s or early 70s Traynor Bassmate combo. Vastly superior build for the same $$ if not cheaper. Beautiful sounding amps..

Blues Jr.

There's no way you can go wrong. Fifteen LOUD watts of tone. UNless you're thinking metal, It is the perfect amp under $500.

Re: Cheap Blues Amp

How dead is your Hot Rod deluxe? I've brought my HRD back from the dead twice! The usual culprit is the two 5w ceramic resistors r78 & r79 .These resistors get so hot they melt the traces.:eyecrazy: If you have a solder iron & basic knowledge of electronics?? Google, Justin Holten Hot rod deluxe. if his site is still up? He has a excellent tutorial on this repair. For around $10 bucks (2 new resistors, jumper wire & staking compound) Your up and running again.:cool2: It is a major pain to disassemble & reassemble the PCB from the amp. If justin's site is not up? Shoot me a PM. Maybe I can help walk you thru the repair?

Re: Cheap Blues Amp

Thanks guys, I've been checking the Epi Valve Jr. as it has more mods than I can count, I have checked the Mercury Magnetics upgrade kit with the 6V6, and it sounds killer with p-90's, and it's easy to mike up on larger gigs, So I think that's the way I am going to go.:)

Re: Cheap Blues Amp

Ever try a Roland MicroCube or Cube 30? Really good amps, IMO. John McLaughlin gigged for years with a Roland Cube 60. Also, you could build yourself one of my brother's tweed Deluxe amps. http://www.missionamps.com Those are killer little amps!
