Cheap cabinet upgrade.

I got this 4x12 at a community yard sale 3 years ago or more. It was an empty MDF cab that was missing the grill cloth and the back panel. Also was missing most of the baffle screws if I remember right. But what was left was in pretty good shape including the handles and the "tolex" (more like a thin vinyl). It was all of 25 bucks so I took it home. I built a plywood baffle to replace the MDF baffle, including a baffle to back panel brace. I built a plywood back panel, covered it with Tolex and installed a switching jack plate. Covered the new baffle with grill cloth. Put it back together, loaded it with 4 x WGS 12's and wired it up. I have no idea what brand it was but it's a pretty big cabinet, about the size of a 1960 and it sounds great. Since it's now an MDF shell with Plywood baffle and back panel, I just call it a "hybrid". Cost me less than $100 for the cabinet itself when all was said and done (not counting the speakers of course).

I posted a grill cloth thread about this thing a while back. Figured I'd post a few photos of the entire thing since there have been some cheap cabinet related threads lately.

Re: Cheap cabinet upgrade.

Love the grill cloth very classy, check you out.

Thanks. I posted a thread asking for pointers back when I was about to do it 3 years ago. Didn't get much help here but there were a few tips in threads on other forums. That cloth is really stiff, doesn't stretch and I just barely had enough of it. The challenge was keeping the pattern straight and getting it taut. It came out pretty well.
