AWESOME!

Ok so maybe it doesn't look like a beauty queen, but I needed a raw slide tone and I had a homeless Cool Rails, a cheap Dobro and nothing to do on sunday morning so I tought why not!?

I'm **** glad I did it, sounds awesome, especially when you drive the amp, a very raw, thick and fat slide tone best thing is I can control the feedback with the slide, so when I want to I can sustain a note for the longest time, tomorrow I'll try it louder and see if I can find the sweet spot before it feedbacks.

Re: Cheap Dobro + Cool Rails =

Always tought of doing that but with a regular steel string guitar.

Awesome.

Re: Cheap Dobro + Cool Rails =

sweet!

what strings do you use?

i tried a single coil (duncan designed acoustic SC) before for my acoustics but it sucked. so i use a tranducer instead.

i read somewhere before, that acoustic strings has less magnetic pull than electric ones. maybe that's why i did not like it..

but anyway, nice axe you got there, i'm sure it plays awesome!

Very, very nice !!!

I always thought a reso of any sort, would only sound good/work w. a low-out put PU. Those Cool Rails are HOT = something like 12K, i think !

I would LOVE to have an all metal Reso with a pu, but they are soooo hard to find and/or sickingly expensive :(

What amp/dirt boxes do you use ?
String size ?

Re: Cheap Dobro + Cool Rails =

Why do you tempt me? My mind is weak and my funds never quite reach that thing...

EDIT: Daang, that's cheap! Me wanna!

It is called GAS my friend, and it seems i was born with this illness
:D

That is also the cheapest acoustic that i like - all the others seem way out of my reach !!!
Gibson, Gretsch, Rainsong, Martin, National, Dell'Arte - the list goes on !

Do it bro, the sound is quite unique to my ears it sounds like a buffed acoustic, it's still an acoustic tone but bigger and playing with overdrive is such fun, learning how to control the feedback, it's like a poor mans electric with a sustainer hahaha.
Be sure to wire a volume control, that way you can play acoustic and in a solo you can turn the volume on and get a bigger fatter tone, or turn it all the way up and drive that amp.
It's unique and very fun to play.
Thanks man.

That made my day! Very cool stuff.

Thank you :)
I'm glad to know my posts help and that people enjoy them.

I like it!

Well it kinda depends when what you're looking for it doessn't sound like an eletric guitar nor does it sound like an acoustic that's just amplified, it's somewhere between the two. Or it could be the pickup, what didn't you like about it?

I've read that same thing about acoustic strings, and it does make sense.
I'm using acoustic strings, usually the heaviest gauge I can find, and since in Portugal no many people use them, they're hard to come by, these particular ones are 0.13 they are from Guild I think.

LOL, porque falar em português é perigoso...eles podem aprender a língua e depois não podemos conspirar contra os EUA!

It also tought it only worked with low oputput pickups, but I only had a Cool Rails laying around so I decided to try it. I think the CR is about 9k or something, it's a neck position.

If you live in Europe check Harley Benton and Johnson Guitars, thomann.de used to have both brands, and I must say they're not bad and they are cheapHere's a metal body resonator from Harley Benton
If you are in Europe just press your countrys flag to get the right price (the link I sent you is with the portuguese taxes).

Expensive resonator don't make sense to me, my favourite resonator players, had very cheap ones and I wish I could sound like them, buying an expensive one to me just doesn't make much sense.

As for the dirtboxes, I try and keep it very simple.
I have three amps:
1 - Pignose 7100 (cheap 5 watter that sounds AMAZING to me I love the cleans and if turn the volume up you get a nice distortion to play slide with) I don't use effects with it, except on a rare ocasion I'll use a Maxon OD808 (a Tube Screamer replica)
2 - Tech 21 Trademark 30 - I used it for recording, playing at night and practice, it emulates three amps a tweed, a marshall and a mesa boogie, so no effects needed, for cleans I use the tweed setting for slide a either use the tweed with some gain or the marshall with some gain, depends on the days I guess.
3 - My main amp a Fender 5E3 clone with some mods, I get the distortion from the tubes, or I have to play at low volumes from my OD808, with a small amount of overdrive.

So does it still sound like a Dobro, it definitly has the dobro sound, just louder and fatter, with distortion it sounds very different from an acoustic but I wonder how many people would say that it's a Dobro., wish I had a mic so I could record.

Sorry to take so long but this way you get a long boring answer

well the pickup itself sucks. its a cheap duncan designed maverick. the pickup itself has no eq and no volume. the tone was brittle and very dry. it did amplify my sound but the acostic tone was lost.

the cool rails i guess realy compliments the slide type riffs. it can mellow it out. plus it a humbucker so no noise =)

why dont you try spliting it and see how it sounds?

Re: Cheap Dobro + Cool Rails =

I can see how the Cool Rails would be an ideal pickup for a resonator. The rails pickups are impervious to noise and it'd also be nice to split it with a pull-up volume pot.

How did you cut the hole for it?

I wish I could put a Cool Rails or lipstick single in my chrome Johnson resonator, but I'd also like to have a bisquit pickup installed it it, so I could blend the 2.

It must have been the pickup then, but it's always a cool experience.

I agree with you on the Cool Rails, it's a very warm and mellow pickup and since it has a bit more output and it's fatter than a single coil slide licks sound amazing with it.
Good idea I didn't try spliting it, I must try that, in a sunday when I have lots of time (this things have a HUGE number of screws)

You have a chrome Johnson? Sweet how do you like it? I tried one and liked it very much.
Blending a lipstick with a bisquit pickup...now that would be VERY interesting, especially for fingerpicking.

I traced around the pickup and used a drill to cut the hole, no rulers involved, it acually to alot more time screwing the resonator than installing and drilling the pickup.
This **** thing has more than 25 screws!

Just picture this:
- Remove 20+ screws
- Open the guitar up
- Drill holes
- Get pickup in the hole and wire everything
- Install strings
- Plug it in and not hearing a sound
- Remove the strings, screws and resonator parts AGAIN
- Realising you forgot to solder the wire to the jack
- Intalling the resonator and screws
- String it up BUT oh no you forgot, you took the saddles off and didn't put them in!
- Remove all the effing screws again.....
- Intall the saddles
- Finally stringing it and being able to get sweet slide tones out of it.

I felt like an idiot hahaha

Thank You for that link - i heard some very pos. comments on those Johnsons.
Some well established US blues muso that i have e-mailed in the past use them, and they say that the Johnson single cone model is the closest you can get to the National for under $1500.00, so they MUST be good !

So tell me about those blues players that you like to listen too that use cheaper reso's, as i am ALWAYS on the look out for new reso-blues music !

Oh, and i love the 5e3 amp that you have.
I would kill for a Nick Greer Underdog Mod1 5e3 combo or head/2x12 w. Greenbacks.

Ever tried to use a bit of fuzz in your chain ???

Keep in mind that you can buy a Johnson resonator and later upgrade the cones to National ones, it will still be cheaper.

Most early blues players that use resonators had cheap ones.
Nowadays people look for a resonator when they want a specific sound, but back in the late 1920s early 1930s it was because they were louder than a traditional acoustic made of wood, and were far more resistant.
Just picture a small juke joint with lots of smoke, you have a small band behind you and a singer that sings extremely loud (just check Ma Rainey for example) you had to play loud and cut through the mix, and resonator guitars did just that, they weren't much more expensive than other acoustics. I read somewhere that a National single cone would go for 60 bucks in the 1930s a Martin of the same era would be between 50 and 60 bucks.
It's funny how things change, they were created out of necessity to sound later and cut better.

As for Blues players that use resonators I mostly listen to some pretty old stuff, here are some names:

Tampa Red (first person to record with a National Tricone, that I am aware of).

Son house, he used a single cone, and had a very different style from Tampa, much more percursive and raw.

Bukka White, also used a single cone, kinda similar style to Son House.

Blind Boy Fuller somewhere between the raw style of Son and Bukka and the smoother style of Tampa, very nice voice too.

Some more modern reso players that I really like:

Rory Gallagher, altough he played mostly electric his tunes with a reso were amazing! What a great player.

Taj Mahal, he plays alot of music styles and alot of instruments, but he also has some great tunes played with a reso.

Eric Sardinas, forget everything you know about a resonator guitar, he uses a Washburn resonator with some (sometimes alot) of distortion, he also plays fast not your traditional reso player, but you might like it.

If you find a 5E3 for a nice price, get one, they're such nice amps, great cleans especially with single coils, and they're sweet when you drive the tubes. I have a combo with a G12H I prefer the G12H highs especially when you overdrive the amp, they are smoother.

I some big muffs, but couldn't stand the sound, maybe it's the pedals because I like recorded fuzz. Any fuzz pedals suggestions?

Re: Cheap Dobro + Cool Rails =

I've had 2 of the Johnson resonators, and can honestly say they're the best bell brass resonator you can buy for the money. I've tried all the other ones in the $600 range, and nothing compares to the Johnson. Johnson acoustics tend to be crappy, but their resonators are made by someone else, I think......way higher quality.

Mine has rosevine engraving on the top, sides, and back, and the neck is a nice rounded C neck. Some of the other brands have a skinny neck, or the whole guitar doesn't resonate like an old National. The Johnson is just a tiny step below a National.
All the rest are WAY below that quality.

If you want one, just keeping watching Ebay. I see them go for around $400 sometimes. My current one was gotten by trading away a Fender Am Std. and I don't regret it a bit.
