Cheap guitar/practice amp combo for holidays

Hey folks,

Next year, I’m planning to buy a cheap guitar and amp to store at my sister’s house so I can practice over the holidays, stay connected to music, and not lose my sanity during the inevitable family drama. My question is: what’s a good, affordable guitar / amp combo that won’t run me over $300 or so in total? I know I could just get a Squier combo, but I’d like humbuckers and at least 22 frets (24 ideally) on the guitar in question so I can still play metal.

Recommendations?

Cheapie Ibanez and a second-hand 15 watt modeling amp? I paid $30 or $40 for my Peavey Vypyr. For what it is (and what you're looking for), it's perfect.

For 300, I'd buy a lightly used guitar -like a Epiphone SG or Fender Squire Telecaster and a VOX headphone amp for 30.00

This way you put more money in your guitar and still have the full experience and can buy a decent amp later

A tele would fair better in the closet in the mean time

Whatever you prop up in the closet to wait on you till next year will have a warped neck and rusty strings by the time you get back

The amp would fair better but not much

Get a guitar case and the headphone thingy
Take it back and forth with you

In fact hauling one with you isn't that hard

Used Korg Pandora or Pocket Pod w/ headphones off the bay for $60-100

Hit the pawn shops for the guitar!

Thanks, everyone. Unexpectedly, I was able to get a super-cheap Univox from a family member for free (son isn't playing it anymore, mom wanted to get it out of the house). So I picked up a cheap Vox amp, plugged in, and was able to get some valuable practice/playing time this holiday! But I'll definitely keep your suggestions in mind should I want to upgrade the guitar to something more metal.

If it's only for a week every year, renting is also an option.
