Re: cheap tube amps

In my experiece even 5 watt tube amps can be too loud for the bed room.

Maybe something like the Bad Cat Mini Cat? Around $885?

I think it also depends on how you are going to be running it.

I run the Fender Champ (5-7w, and cheap) at half-tilt with an overdrive so that I'm happy with the sound and that's way louder than you can get away with in an apartment or bedroom really.

Fender Pro Junior with some ECC83s Preamp Tubes and some power tubes rated to 7. It will get you in the tone zone for classic rock. Great amp. Cleans up really well with a volume knob.. Overall its better for single coils though.

Re: cheap tube amps

The Crate V-series amps are very good amps for the money. A lot of people say stay away from the Crate name, but these amps were actually designed by Ampeg and sound wonderful! I use a Crate V32, and it sounds good at bedroom volumes to me (Though sounds even better when you can crank the thing!). The cleans are great, very much like a Vox. The distortion is very Marshall-y, and can go from a very clean crunch sound like Cream or Free to Van Halen to 80s metal tone (I was able to get a very convincing Scorpions rhythm tone at bedroom volumes with the gain up). The V32 was 600, but for bedroom volumes if you don't need a dedicated clean channel, the V16 should work well for you. And it could probably hold its one at a practice with a drummer who can control himself.
