checking ohms on a cabinet

i will be getting my used cab tomorrow and was wondering if there was a way to verify the cab ohms. all i can think of is to plug my speaker cable in and use my fluke to test how many ohms of resistance is thereat the other end of the cable to make sure i match it to my heads properly. will this work? i cant imagine that the cabel will raise the resistance much, and if it does i guess i need a new cbale

Re: checking ohms on a cabinet

Yes that will work. It'll read lower than the actual value since you are measuring ohms of resistance and a speaker is rated in ohms of imedance. I think for 16ohms you'll get about 11 or 12 ohms. Obviously that best way is to open the back and confirm the speakers and wiring. Probably not a bad idea for a used cab... My buddy had a Marshall cab that should have been loaded with G12T-75s or V30s, when he opened it he found cheapie MG Line speakers...

^^^Yep DC resistance comprises around 70 to 75% of speaker impedance (which varies somewhat with frequency anyway).

Open the back of the cab and check the wiring and speaker ratings directly and see if it matches the reading on the meter... Also you can better verify the identity of the parts... Especially a 4x12, there's multiple ways to wire up a 4x12 and get the same ohm reading at the Jack.... If they won't let you open the back I wouldn't buy it. They're hiding something...

my friend did pull the speakers out to verfy that its loaded with the original carvin br12-100 speakers, but I forgot if they were 4, 8 or 16 ohm speakers. I do know that the cab is front loaded so he had pulled the grill and speakers out. will the back come off if its front loaded? this will be my first 4x12 cab. my 2x12 that i currently use does have a removable back panel and is loaded from the rear.
