Chet pickin thread

Re: Chet pickin thread

I love Chet! He was my dad's favorite guitarist ever and I was introduced to his stuff when I was like 10yrs old,,,,waaay back lol.

Re: Chet pickin thread

Nice! I'm getting into him recently. Was looking for something fingerstyle to study and this is my favorite so far.

I tend to do those kind of tunes hybrid picked (regular flat pick and fingers), rather than thumb or finger picked. Chet sure makes it look easy, though.

Re: Chet pickin thread

I like that because you can go into single note lines with the pick. I don't have as good dexterity hybrid as with all fingerstyle tho.

Re: Chet pickin thread

I finished learning Windy and Warm today. I'm happy because it's my 1st real Chet tune. I tried it last summer but then gave up. The 4 hour a day practice routine is bomb. I played it all fingerstyle, but I'm getting better with the pick hybrid. I'm applying it with Chet bass to simpler stuff like blues changes or Autumn Leaves changes.

Dude Mincer, I'm really liking the hybrid picking Chet picking. I'm gaining competence of it. I like it because you can alternate between the counterpoint and pick only chord accents or single note flurries.

I think that is where it lies- you can go from chord melody stuff to fast single notes, etc by just lifting your fingers out of the strings. I hate having to learn a new technique to play a certain way, and you can combine these easily.

Re: Chet pickin thread

Another beginner Chet tune. I remember there was a thread asking about beginner Chet tunes but I couldn't find it.

Re: Chet pickin thread

I have no idea how any of you play your guitars like this. I have tried, but I think that even if I watched all YouTube it would never be the same as that moment on your own where it suddenly goes CLICK.

I love this style. It's a nice way to play solo because it grooves all on its own. I started last summer and then gave up. Thought I wouldn't be able to get it but I practiced more this year and was hating the tune lol. Eventually went to the eff yourself program of practicing a lot and going 2 miles an hour and I got it.

In the "Classical Gas" clip, wait for around 2 minutes when he does "Walk Don't Run" for a few bars.

Re: Chet pickin thread

I have a hard time playing with a thumb pick. I tend to use a hybrid picking approach (flatpick & fingers) for this style. I can then go between styles a little easier. I got into this style by listening to Steve Howe, and learning some of his tunes.

Re: Chet pickin thread

Of course, if you learn this one, you'll save a bunch of money on your car insurance.
