So say you are given a chord chart.....what factors into your decision making process when choosing where to play said chord, what notes you put in (all of them) or what you leave out (theres a bassist in your band)
We all know theres a million and one way to play a group of notes, so how do you go about it?
I'm starting to realise how much better it sounds when you dont play all of the chord; usually taking out the root note helps.
Also, playing the chords in such a fashion that they kind of make their own melody......I'll give you an example of what i mean.....this is a blues/bebop turnaround i'm sure you've heard many a time:
- 5 - 3
7 - 5 5
6 5 4 5
7 5 5 4
6 5 4 3
- - - -
You can see that the 6-5-4-3 movement on the 2nd string gives this counter melody thing....what is this called?...and how do i bring more of it into my playing!!!
Obviously theres no hard and fast rule, but give me your ideas
