Chord question

When writing music, what is the correct way to denote the difference between two versions of the same chord?

for example:
Code:
---------------------
----5--------5-------
----0--------5-------
----2--------5-------
----3--------3-------
---------------------

Those are both C major chords. How does one record the difference when indicating the chord name above it?

Re: Chord question

well, in standard musical notation, those two inversions would look quite different ... there would be no mistaking the fact that the second note (lowest pitch to highest) is the 3rd of the chord in your first example while the second note is the 5th of the chord in your second example

if you are using tab, it is self obvious which is which

if you are writing some kind of 'lead sheet' or chord chart, you could draw the 'fingering grid' to tell the guitarist which to play ...

hope this helps
good luck
