classic covers

what does it mean by "dual wax potted".. I had a JB and my tech put on a nickel cover ordered from seymour duncan.. well after I noticed that it altered the tone (I could hear a loss in highs) I took it off and noticed that all he did was solder the cover on.. is that all SD does with the classic covers?.. or are the covers "potted" with parrafin wax or some other procedure?

Re: classic covers

I'm pretty sure they put some more wax in after the cover. I'm really like the covered JB, it takes a little off the top end.

Re: classic covers

yeah see that's what I don't want.. I simply want the cover for aesthetics.. I don't want any top end taken off.. when my guitar tech added the cover without either putting more wax or simply a strip of electrical tape it made it lose top end.. I'm hoping there's no tonal difference between a classic covers JB and an open coil

Re: classic covers

IMO, it's more likely that the shielding of the cover cuts the highs somewhat, rather than the potting, which is more to prevent microphonics.

not that I would know, but that's what I gather from those who have compared covered and open coil versions of the same pickup.
