CLASSIC ROCK CONTENT: P-90 PRS/OCD/EL 84's/CELESTION GOLD

A few weeks ago there were a few posts discussing speakers and the new Celestion Gold. I have one that I put in a 1x12 mesa boogie thiele cabinet and I finally got off my lazy butt and recorded it.
Took a great classic rock backing track, my PRS McCarty with p-90's, my OCD, plugged into a custom amp my brother made (used the marshall based pre-amp and el-84 power tubes) and ran it through the celestion 1x12 cabinet. Mic'ed it with a senheisser 421 and that is it.

As usual just one take. Didn't know what to play on the bridge first time through so I took a little break, was going to go back and punch something in, never got to it so here is the clip the way it went down

I love the tone!! Perfect for this kind of music, sweet and transparent imho.

Playing sounds sweet as well! The notes are 100% there, great style, you could easily play in the studio, perhaps you already do it :)

Thanks for the feedback guys. I really like the way the p-90's recorded. I thought a bit more about the recording set-up and now I am not sure I used the OCD at all. My amp has an extra pre-amp stage that I can add to the marshall pre-amp and I think i used that. That tone may just have been guitar and amp. The amp has a real singing open tone. The amp was custom made for me, I actually like it more than my boogie MKII C+.
Thanks again for the nice comments, I seldom get time to record these days.

Ya, you got a nice snarl when you need it, clean brite lead all the way. Excellent man. The overall tone is great work.

I try to get the amp set to were it will just start to snarl and give some overtones and slight feedback when you dig in. When I record I tend to wear hadphones which cut out some of the direct sound from the amp, I hear the backing track and my guitar through the board. This makes me play a little more aggressively. The amp is very sensitive to dynamics and the harder you push it the more it will bark but if you lay off on your attack it will sweeten up really nicely. I also tend to do a lot of double stops and bends and hold them and let them ring and snarl a little before moving on. It's just my style of playing I have picked up. LIndsey Buchingham sometimes plays the same way. I don't know if I picked it up from him or not but this style of playing has come out more and more in my playing lately.

Might be an odd comment, but you might consider using a less balanced 'perfect' tone- be cool to hear you fighting the tone a bit more. Like if it's too clean, trying to get that aggressiveness through other means, or there's too much OD, trying to keep it together, or rolling the tone down and seeing if you can still punch the notes out.

Oh, you do make it sound so natural and easy going.

Good job.

Odd but that is actually what I do. I listen to the backing track and my guitar in the headphones. I always put the guitar considerably quieter so I can hear the backing track better. This makes me play harder than I would if I were sitting in front of the cranked amp.

Sweet. I need to relax more myself. I'm going to play around recording a bit this weekend, after the day-time activities.
