classic white gibson explorers and vs

Re: classic white gibson explorers and vs

Yep. It started in the early '90's, from what I have been told here. LP Studios as well, right?

That is why instead of buying a black Explorer, I bought a white one, and will refinish it in black. The rosewood looks pretty bad on a black finish IMO. With binding, it's another story, though!

My Alpine White Gibson Les Paul Jr. Special has an ebony fingerboard also.

Yep, white Studio LP's and Explorers get ebony fretboards. White SG's however, have rosewood.

:dunno:

Some white SG's have ebony as well. You just have to check because they varied depending on the model, year, and if it was a run like for GC/MF etc.

Re: classic white gibson explorers and vs

i heard only white gibson vs/explorers have ebony fretboards, is this true? and if so do all white ones have ebony?

No.

What is happening is that the Gibson guitars that:
  • come in white
  • and have no fretboard binding
  • that means the LP Studio, Explorer, V and some firebird or other

will always have ebony fretboards when finished in white (because the rosewood bleeds into the white nitro according to Gibson).

However, Gibson makes stacks of these things before deciding which color to paint them in. So when market conditions change they might have more demand for non-white than expected but they had made ebony board blanks for the original estimate. That's when you see non-white samples of these guitars with ebony board.
