Clean Amp Help

I’d like to get some recommendations for a good, 6L6 based combo to be used primarily for clean sounds. Something all tube with a good, warm clean sound for Jazz & Blues around $1000. The less bells & whistles the better, crunch isn’t an issue, I have a Marshall 2204 for that. So far I’ve narrowed it down to a Fender 65 Twin re-issue and the Mesa Boogie F-50. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers,

CJ

Re: Clean Amp Help

If you're looking for super clean tone for Jazz, you might think about a Roland Jazz Chorus. I don't know what they're going for, but they're very clean.

maybe a used mark iv, those are pretty much the warmest amps out there

twins are more chimey than warm

Re: Clean Amp Help

Uh, I do not believe there is any better bang for the buck in the world of Clean Tube 6L6 Amps than the Fender Hot Rod series. The 2x12's are 60 watts and FREAKING LOUD! You'll need a good distortion pedal if you ask me because I think those amps have sucky od channels.

You can find one on Ebay for $500 and still have enough to upgrade the speakers and tubes!

Re: Clean Amp Help

All good suggestions so far. Last time I looked you could get a SF twin
for around $500 ? Even Cheaper a (Don't laugh) a Red knob twin. The
Red Knobs get a bum rap, But the Twins where a pretty good amp.

Re: Clean Amp Help

I thought I read that while the Hot Rod series DO have nice cleans, there's just not a lot of clean headroom. Breaks up too quick. True?

$1000.00, warm all tube clean, 6L6, Combo...you just spelled out FENDER TWIN!!! Were I you I would pickup either used reissue, or a pre 74 Silverface, have it blackfaced, and upgrade the speakers. I have a 69 model, and belive it or not I am in the amp for less that $625.00 thats with the mods and 2 more sets of speakers (a set of Jensons, and a set of middle 60's EV's), you just have to look hard!

Re: Clean Amp Help

I'd say the Twin, it sounds great. If you are not hung up on EL34s, try the 6v6/EL84 Mesa Blue Angel.

My friend recently bought one of these and yes it is true. It was breaking up at practice level with drums and he was using an all single coil strat. Kind of dissapointing.

Re: Clean Amp Help

go for either a new twin, or any used 35-85 watt fender from 59-66.

I got my blonde bandmaster for 500 and it sounds way better than lots of the new PCB replicas as it still has the blue mallory caps and NOS astron electrolytic caps.

Soon ill plug that into one of my jbl d130f's that is being reconed and ill have a really good fat, warm clean tone with 0 speaker distortion.

Another route is to get any lower wattage SF amp such as a bandmaster or bassman and mount a fender twin OT on it. This will maintain the amp's character and overall warmness, but it will be loud enough to make your pant legs flap.
