Clean long sustain

I'm looking for the best way to get those killer Gilmour clean sustain tones.
My MXR dyna comp does a fair job but not enough!
I have a nano big muff but thats a way too dirty tone .
I have been wondering about the t-rex tonebug sustainer.
Anyone have any knowledge/experience with this pedal ?
Or indeed any other suggestions ?

Gilmour is a CS-2 user. Check your guitar first, make sure the action is high enough and the saddle and nut aren't damping the strings. Also, as above play louder. You get natural amp compression and the acoustic feedback loop.

Yes, I have wondered about a CS2, some very scruffy ones out there at silly prices!
Any thoughts on the CS3 ? I have seen mixed reviews!
I'm pretty happy with my guitar setup as I spent a lot of time on this since doing my mods

There are a few, but couple of floyd tracks that come to mind are.
The solo at the end of A great day for freedom (Gdansk) where there are several double and triple bends and the note sustains.
And the beginning of coming back to life.
(I'm saying clean but not sure) !

If so, then it's far from clean - though deceptive. The key is to listen towards the end where he hits some chords, you'll hear how dirty it is. Without being an aficionado of his signal chain (though I am of his playing!), I would suggest this signal chain would get you close:

Strat - comp (low attack, long sustain - i.e. It doesn't clamp down on the transient, but sustains the tail - I use my Xotic SP Comp in this fashion) - fuzz (volume higher, gain lower, I think) - analogue/tape delay - reverb - driven amp channel (I.e. Amp is already compressing before being hit by the higher levels from fuzz)

I would note that the delay/reverb might be in the loop of the amp, though from listening to this solo it feels more like it's into the front of the amp as it's blending in with the original signal.

Also, bear in mind that his tone heard separated out from the orchestra and keyboards would sound very different (which is what I mean by deceptive) - this video is a pretty dense soundscape (and mastered for DVD), so a lot of the dirt in his tone is blending in with everything else.

Listening to it again, I think there may also be phase/flange somewhere in there - though that could be modulation coming from a tape delay (or emulation). Beautiful solo.

Yes that is the solo! Amazing!
I have been lucky enough to see gilmour/floyd live 5 times over the years,
But I have only recently got into playing guitar hence my lack of knowledge on how best to achieve the tone I want
So with some trial and error I should get close with my dyna comp, nano big muff, and nova nd1 delay?
Oh and stereo electric mistress ?
I'm pretty happy with my strat now having just replaced the pickups with.
Neck fat 50
Middle CS69
Bridge SSL-5
I only play at home so restricted with the amp/volume.
I am using a blackstar HT5R

Yeah, you have the components to build the tone. And a lifetime to learn his nuances!

Thanks you so much for taking the time to do that! Much appreciated.
It gives me a lot more insight into how the various pedals interact with each other (and the amp!)
I had noticed that my big muff sounded really noisy but now have seen how you can tame it !
It was good to see how you build up the tone piece by piece
And yes he did, or rather still does play a telecaster, in fact his 1st electric guitar was a tele,
He uses one on 'run like hell' 'fat old sun' to name a couple.
I am also waiting on a Boss ME80 processor so I can compare with individual pedals, I will keep the pedals though until I'm sure which is the best setup for me as I only play at home.

Let me just say that I admire anyone who starts playing guitar (or doing anything totally new) as a full-grown adult! Takes a certain level of something to just say "Yep, I wanna learn how to do that" and just do it.
