cleaning a maple fretboard

Re: cleaning a maple fretboard

Trust me on this one, lighter fluid and a rag. Lighter fluid is the same thing as naptha and that is what cleans really well. It will not harm anything either. Alot of luthiers and techs use it.

Re: cleaning a maple fretboard

Don't clean off that mojo. Makes for better tone. :)

Re: cleaning a maple fretboard

you know what i havent ever cleaned my fret board, it normally gets cleaned when i take it to the shop for a tune up but that was over a year ago!

Re: cleaning a maple fretboard

What the guys have said for cleaning the maple board is correct - for cleaning frets I use wire wool (0000 grade) and give them a quick clean with them. Just don't overdo it - if the frets are really pitted you may need to get them properly dressed. Don't condition the board with anything (lemon oil, conditoner etc) as maple is usually finished and doesn't need it.

Re: cleaning a maple fretboard

Finished Maple: warm water and a dab of soap
Rosewood / Ebony /Pau Ferro/ unfinished Maple/ et. al. : Naphtha followed by Lemon Oil or Bore Oil (I prefer Lemon)

BTW, I highly recommend that you DO NOT use Lighter Fluid (Naphtha) on a guitar finished with Nitrocellulose lacquer (notably Gibsons). It can damage the finish, I still have 10 year old spots on my Flying V to prove it ;)

Re: cleaning a maple fretboard

I have used naptha on maple fretbaords with great sucess but, I know they were not nitro finished though. I would take zerbs word for it even though I can not neither confirm or deny it.
