Came back from tour to find my explorer had this surprise for me

It’s my fault I mean I left the masking tape on there

How can I clean this off? I don’t have naphtha etc

I’m thinking elbow grease with some water and light soap?

Imagining what the pic should be...

If you buff with too much elbow grease you could dull the finish. Any smoke shop should have naptha. Alternatively, I have wiped isopropyl on nitro with no issues (it's commonly used for car detailing too) Just dont let it sit or pool on it. Either should dissolve the glue right away with a little *light* wiping.

My first thought was alcohol
But I would test it on the back of the neck first

Re: Cleaning tape glue off of Gibson body?

Mineral spirits (or "paint thinner" if you can still find it), 100 percent cotton rag (brand new or freshly laundered), light pressure, and take your time. After it is off, use a final step (i.e. ultra fine) car polish, if you created any swirls.

Hair dryer to melt the residue. Works on skateboards when removing grip tape, should work on a guitar

Good god no.......you'll melt the finish right off the guitar.

Re: Cleaning tape glue off of Gibson body?

Goo Gone for sure, I've used it on all types of guitars, however, always check on a spot on the back or something first!

Re: Cleaning tape glue off of Gibson body?

Both goo gone and wd40 can smear and leave oily residue. It is best to use something that will evaporate, not something that can sit on the surface or worse, penetrate

I don't know how you're going to remove an entire hallway from your guitar

This is horrible, stupid advice that should be fully deleted.

Re: Cleaning tape glue off of Gibson body?

Goo Gone to loosen and rub off the residue. Then buff with a clean towel (or use a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol if the finish is poly) to remove the residue from the Goo Gone. Simple, quick and painless

Re: Cleaning tape glue off of Gibson body?

Trumpet oil works really well with removing sticker/tape residue. Used to do it all the time when cleaning used guitars at a shop in the 90's. A soft polishing cloth with light movements after the trumpet oil soaks in to it will get it off easily. Then wipe off any excess and polish with another clean soft cloth.

Re: Cleaning tape glue off of Gibson body?

Ronson lighter fluid
Is naphtha

Yellow and blue can

Made for old zippo lighters

Used to be in every convenience store and supermarket

I’ve seen it done successfully with a Gibson SG and LP. I’ve done it myself with stained decks from the 80’s with sticker residue. You warm up the residue until you can roll it up into a ball.
