Clear acrylic pickguard material

Has anyone made their own pickguard using this material? Does it crack easy like plexiglass, or does it bend before it breaks like lexan or regular pickguard material?

I wanted to have a black/white/black single humbucker pickguard made by Greasy Groove for my RG550, but since removing the pickguard, I think I may go with a clear acrylic pickguard, so that had me wondering what its like to work with.

Thanks guys, appreciate it.

Ps,
If anyone knows where to get a sheet of this that will not crack easy, please let me know and Ill go ahead and order from where ever that is. Right now Im kinda just shopping around at places that I do know of.

Yes Sir

I saw one online and loved the way it looked. If that fails then Ill go black and never go back.

If you get a chance post a few of those pics I sent you on Facebook. Maybe the RFR and that Yellow one with the blue pickups, that thing is sweet. Thanks

Did I miss something?

Why not just order a clear 550 guard? Several places have them

Re: Clear acrylic pickguard material

I can do that and I might have to just order one, just figured it would be way cheaper to just make my own though, plus I always wondered what type of material was used for the clear and if it was brittle or not, so I figured Id try to take care of both queries with this post.

$25 for a ready to go guard versus $12 for a blank sheet, and then you need to cut it (assuming you have the tools).

Take it from a guy who has thousands of dollars of tools and love to make stuff...order a cut one. :D

Re: Clear acrylic pickguard material

I agree. I have made a few pickguards from scratch over the years and it is difficult to get them to look professional, difficult to get everything in just the right spot, and extremely difficult to do all of that on clear without scratching it up while doing so.
If you can really buy one for $25, do it. (And this is coming from a guy who built his own guitar and rehoused his own amp!)

Re: Clear acrylic pickguard material

I have made pickguard, cavity, and trem covers many times before outnof lexan, polished stainless, etc.. I can do it myself thats the only reason Im considering it, otherwise Id suggest the same as you guys and just buy one. Its around $40 for the pickguard plus shipping. If I can find a sheet for $15 then Ill make one, if not then Ill probably just buy one already made.

I was really just wondering what that material is like to work with as well, which my real reason for posting this. I know lexan is very forgiving and ive used that before but I cant find anything small enough, only big sheets. Plexiglass sucks, ive tried that and it is too brittle.

Re: Clear acrylic pickguard material

Plexiglass is a type of acrylic, but you're right, it's harder and a PITA without the right tools.

Re: Clear acrylic pickguard material

I've just used acrylic sheets purchased at Lowes or Home Depot with no problems.
