Click Sound in Fender Deluxe Reverb Reissue

Hi all!

Just a simple amp maintenance question. Recently got a DRRI secondhand, I believe the original owner bought it in 2021, making it about 3 years old. Apparently never gigged and it seems in perfect condition.

Today was the first time i heard a quiet but noticeable click when digging in, particularly on double stops where multiple notes play contemporarily. The click is right at the transient of when i play, its extremely short and is litirally a single 'tik' as soon as my strings start vibrating.

I would make a video but I doubt it would be audible.

Anyone experienced this or could have any advice?

Cheers!

its not your pick or fingers hitting the pup right? i cant say ive experienced this before. i have heard the trem tick that dave mentioned, but that can be fixed

Does this happen with the tremolo on? Like a repeating click?

thank you for the reply! I just tried with tremolo on and no it does not repeat with tremolo. It’s exclusively sometimes right on the transient of some notes. Frequent with increasing volume

Hello! And thanks for the reply. I just tried to be really careful to where I pick and even when picking between the pickups, it still seems to come through. Also tried to stick a long delay on while playing to hear if the click would repeat with the delays, but it was still exclusively on the first strum/pick of some notes. Right on the loudest transients.

thats very odd. if its not getting picked up by the delay, it might be something clipping in the amp on the first really hard transient. it only happens when playing hard?

My first thought was static off a plastic pickguard when you strike the strings. Would have to know the guitar and how you play, if you rest any part of your hand on the pickguard and/or move it around, lifting it off, etc.

It happens when I dig in, and gets more frequent as I turn up the guitar volume.

My guitar has had some grounding issues in the past but they were fixed a ehile ago. It is a Fender Strat. The pickguard and routing have been covered in copper tape to reduce noise. Maybe something to do with that?

Yes, very possible. You have to ground the entire shield. The pickguard shield has to make solid contact with the routing shield and all that needs to be grounded. Next time it happens, try rubbing an anti-static dryer sheet on the pickguard and play again and see if it goes away.

SOLVED!

It was infact the pickguard. When i play a bit aggressively, my fingers tend to slap the pickguard. I tried flicking the pickguard without touching any strings and the same click happened even when there was no string noise. And when playing with a conscious effort to stay clear of the pickguard, no clicking!

It does surprise me as i did do a whole shielding of the routing and it is all grounded properly but it was some time ago so maybe something went lose in there.

Anyways, I am super relieved that it is not the amp and thank you to everyone for the replies!

You never did say what guitar you were playing. Was a Tele?

Nope, strat. Still haven't been able to actually solve it though. Tried a few temporary solutions. Also tried aluminium tape on the under side of the pickguard but seems like you need to use a specific copper/aluminium tape that has conductive glue, or else the thin layer of glue blocks the conductivity betweent he aluminium and the plastic pickguard.
