Clip: My Project

Re: Clip: My Project

nice stuff, bro

certainly no clams in there ... it all hangs together seemlessly from a melodic standpoint against the harmonic backdrop ... scoots in and out of the chords effortlessly

there was something about it that didn't 'weave', for me, though ... to me, it didnt incorporate as much dynamic motion as it mightve ... and there was something about the rhythmic component of the lines that didnt really lock up with the latin-ish groove ... like it could use a little more 'bounce' ...

i know that i could not do better, but i know that i've heard better

overall thumbs up, because that is the direction it points to in terms of where you are going with it

thanks for sharing it

Thanks man! I think it'll come together with more experience! Isn't that the way it is with most things.

Re: Clip: My Project

how did you construct this? is it midi? or sequenced samples? or some other cat playing a chart of what you wrote ? ... i am not sure i am understanding the distinction you made between 'playing it' and 'writing it'

It is this program called Band-in-a-Box. You type in your chord progression and choose a style from the menu then it creates the accompaniment for you. From there I use the programs notation tool to enter the melody and solo on a staff in standard musical notation. Then I pick an instrument from the menu to play the parts that I have written. I then save it as a .wav and use a converter to take it to mp3.

It uses the Forte Dxi Syth plugin to render the instrument sounds. Sadly, I don't have any recording equipment yet so this has to do for now. Therefore, everthing you hear is computer generated.

To me the idea of using something like this sux but it's also cool at the same time! ROFL! Surprisingly, though I read an interview with Pat Martino were he stated he used similar computer aided tools to help him in his comeback!

very cool! ... given the technology used, i am not surprised that the recording didnt have the little human elements (dynamics, pulse-y rhythmic figures, etc.) .. compositionally, it really is pretty sweet ... get a mic for that mac and you'll be golden! :)

I knew about pat martino using technology in his recovery .. he did much / most of that work in association with the university that i attended (pat and i share the same hometown, but he is about my father's age) ... he was there a few years after i graduated

Sounds cool............but man what a trip......I was listening and admiring at how clean and precise the guitar was and was getting ready to get down to practicing on my own cleanliness (figured I better start practing more after hearing that) but then I read more of the thread and realized it was generated.......whew what a relief......I still need to attain that level of preciseness though.......I'm going off to practice now anyway:)

Re: Clip: My Project

I thoroughly enjoyed it, especially after your explanation of its origins. It reminded me of "The Goodbye Look" from Donald Fagan's "The Nightfly". Very cool.

Don't sweat the details Fret! The thing that makes us humans beautiful is that we are perfect in our imperfection!

There is this Brazilian singer named Nana Caymmi. She has the most smokey, hoarse sounding, cracked up voice you'll ever hear man! She doesn't try to refine it. She uses her imperfect gift and she makes the imperfection beautiful man! Go over to ITunes or Amazon and listen to some of her clips. You'll see what I mean.

Thanks for your input guys! Hopefully, there is some recording equipment in my future. Then I can post the real me. But at least you get the idea how my brain works! LOL! If you can call it that!
