Clip on Tuners

Damn these things have made my life simple. I've got a nice Petersen Strobeostomp. But never pull it out unless I'm intonating.

Intellitouch ones are great.

Re: Clip on Tuners

I still use my floor model with a needle for accuracy if I'm going to record or play live. For practicing, a headstock tuner does the job just fine. D'Addario and Snarks are amazingly cheap considering they are bright and pretty accurate.

Re: Clip on Tuners

Yeah, I agree. I wouldnt expect that they would be that accurate, seeing as how they just clip onto the headstock, but seems to do just fine

Re: Clip on Tuners

I have a few of them that I have received for gifts and review units. I love them but have one problem with the clip ons. I will use the tuner and put the guitar back in the case with the tuner clipped on. A week later I can't remember what guitar it is on and don't feel like searching multiple cases. I can't find my favorite one right now so I am using the Planet Waves. Great tuner but the display is a bit small for my aged eyes.

Re: Clip on Tuners

I just picked up a Snark--haven't used it yet. I hear good things.

One of the things you can do that works really well on most acoustics, and you can use almost any tuner with this. I have a couple of the Korg CA-30s, which are very accurate; and I bought an inexpensive contact mic to use with one of them. It's the same principle as the clip on; just two separate pieces instead of an all in one. I think the contact mic was $8.00. It also works on electrics, when I'm plugged in without a pedalboard tuner. The mic's cord can be a bit of a hassle, but it is a low-cost way to add some versatility to your current tuners.

I find that having the FREE "G-strings" tuner app on my Android phone is a must for tuning up when I'm guitar shopping.

At $10 bucks or so each, get a couple. That way when you put them up in a case, you've got another spare.

I actually have them strategically placed around where I live or visit, kinda like reading glasses. One in my shop, one in the case of my main travel guitar, one more in my shop when I can't find the first one. etc.

Re: Clip on Tuners

And, as far as accuracy, I'm thinking they're pretty good for most applications. They work off vibration frequency. What is music? Vibrational frequencies. In theory, it should be any different than plugging into the floor model. But from a cost practicality perspective, they can't be as accurate as the $150 floor tuner you bought, right? Or is that stupid thinking that it costs more so it's gotta be better?!?

Re: Clip on Tuners

Well, with an acoustic I think you do get more of the sympathetic vibrations and harmonics with a clip on, and that can make it harder to tune.

It's darn hard to beat the accuracy of the Strobe-O-Stomp. I have a TU-3 on my board, but I also use my Peterson to set intonation...it is much more accurate. Different tuners for different jobs.

I've got the little Korgs in some of my cases. I think I'll keep the Snark on the sofa. And I forgot...I also have a little Planet Waves clip-on. I'm going to keep that in my banjo case; the 5-string can be a PITA to keep in tune.

Re: Clip on Tuners

I like them at home, but onstage they tend to freak out if it's noisy.

For his acoustic instruments, my friend in VA uses an alligator clip with the wires from one end of a guitar cord attached, then clipped on to a tuning peg. The 1/4 inch plug on the other end goes into his Sabine tuner. Works great.

Re: Clip on Tuners

I was very late in adopting these as an everyday tuner... however, I can't believe how great they work for general applications and kick myself for not giving them a chance sooner. The floor snark works great too for the price (I hate having something clipped to my headstock when I play live, I really think it looks stupid). I too bought a bunch and keep them in cases and everywhere around the rehearsal room...

me too. My Snark is great, but i notice i always tweak the low E string by ear after using it.

I've also noticed the acoustic difference of the sound (using a solid-body) between having the tuner clipped on the headstock, and having it removed. I'm sure it would be more noticeable on an acoustic, but i hear it on my electrics.

Re: Clip on Tuners

I love the g strings app. My phone is always with me, I would never remember where I put that clip on for certain.
