Clowning around...

Re: Clowning around...

I am usually not a big flame maple fan in my old age, I much prefer plaintops, but this top is pretty cool. I found the angle where it really pops (not sure why it's upside down, but). The color is a little washed out in this one. The original pic is accurate.

Re: Clowning around...

Nice!

I picked up a honeyburst Traditional last month myself; great guitar!

To the OP, what is it about the pickups you don't like? I'm still kinda in the honeymoon phase with mine, but I'd like to know your opinion.

Congrats! :bigthumb:

As for the pickups.... I find them and the (polished) Alnico 5 61 zebras heavy on lows, and they tend to mush out under middling amounts of gain, like say the level of a cranked stock NMV Marshall. For me they just do not work. They are much better for low gain bluesy leads and open chords, IME. The BB 1/2, are much better pickups for rock music and have alot more personality.

I have really tried to like both sets (only diff between 61 and 59T is the magnet) and have fiddled and tried to work to their strengths (clarity in the high end, big lows-"wide" tone) but they are just not to my tastes. For that uneven wind almost sounds like a pissed off telecaster PAF tone, I really like an unpotted BB1/2 set. And having said that, ultimately I am not looking for PAF, but rather the sounds of the late Pat#s, and T tops. Low output, poly wire, (much closer to, or) even winds.

oh, and I think I fixed the pic

Thanks for the reply!

I completely see your point. If a pickup doesn't give you what you want, it doesn't matter how "good" it is. You gotta the hammer you're swinging!
I play a lot of blues-rock and classic rock so these are working at the moment, but I just recently changed amp rigs so everything is getting re-tweaked. If the 59T's don't gel with the new amps, I may look at a WLH or Slash set.
