Coil Split Issues?

I just wired my HH Jackson to split to the inner coils, but when I switch to the middle position, the volume is significantly decreased.

The split p'ups sound fine on their own.

I have a Screamin' Demon in the neck, so the fillister screws are being used in split mode, rather than the slugs. Will flipping it around fix this problem?

Diagrams I used:

Thanks.

Re: Coil Split Issues?

If middle position has a volume drop when the pickups are split and when they're full then they're most likely out of phase and you have to swap black and green wires on 1 of the pups.

Re: Coil Split Issues?

Those two coils are out of phase. Turning the pickup around won’t fix that.

There’s a few ways to fix this, but it depends on the polarity of the magnets, coils, and the wiring.

Re: Coil Split Issues?

How do I fix it? They are both Duncans (bridge is Pearly Gates) so I'd assume they'd keep the polarity consistent.

Re: Coil Split Issues?

If you have 1 pickup split traditionally to the slugs, and the other to the screws (like one of each in the second diagram you linked), then because you have chosen this method they are out of phase. Not sure if the hex screws are the slugs for the demon.
Because you have now reversed the wires for 1 to make the split work for the screws, you have 1 reverse wound pickup. You need to do the reverse polarity bit now.....flipping the magnet.

Yeah, this happened to me too...It has been awhile since it happened, but I believe I had to flip a magnet in one pickup.

Re: Coil Split Issues?

Well I could also just flip the Screamin' Demon in the neck and wire it like the bridge?

Re: Coil Split Issues?

If these are both Duncans, then splitting to the inside coils will not be out-of phase. They just won't be hum-cancelling. (Unless, of course, one is wired wrong internally. Which has happened before.) The first I'd do is check with a meter. You really should have a meter if you're going to mess with guitar wiring. They're cheap. Connect the black lead to ground, and the red to hot. Put a screwdriver up against the coils then yank it away. You should get a small negative voltage "blip". Try this on both pups to make sure they both go negative. Be sure to only have that pup selected at the time, or temporarily disconnect the hot wire while you perform this test. Let us know what the results were, and we can go from there.

Re: Coil Split Issues?

Ah yes- I remember. I was trying to get the inside (or outside coils) in phase and humbucking. That's why I had to flip a magnet.

Re: Coil Split Issues?

Ok, both p'ups went negative on their own, but in middle position, neck didn't decrease at all while the bridge barely did.

So how did I mess up the wiring here?

Re: Coil Split Issues?

Ok, trying to translate your words........do you mean that the splits are working when the pickup is splitting when selected individually, but in the middle posi you're not getting the same drop in output/tonal change.

And then, when both are selected, how are you determining how much each pickup is dropping off in (?)volume if they're both on
