Coil splitting wiring schematic

Hi, I've been looking at some wiring diagrams for coil splitting for a mod I'm doing and one of the few that I can interpret is the Seymour Duncan one on the Jimmy Page style wiring diagram, but it doesn't seem to be the ideal wiring based on my simplified knowledge of coil splitting being "bypassing one coil of the humbucker to use the other one and therefore vaguely immitate a single coil".

Here's an illustration of how I believe the SD diagram shows (B) and how I would have done it myself (A). I hope it's clear enough to understand.

Is there something I'm missing?

Can anyone see a problem with me doing (A)?

ok you are just over complicating it a bit

in the diagram above the hot from the pickup selector/volume pot goes to black
the coils are connected red to white
the green and bare shielding wire go to ground

to achieve the coil split simply short the red/white pair to ground
electricity takes the path of least resistance and avoids the second coil on its own

had an idea about running the hot to the push pull and switching the black and red/white pair
to preserve the phase relationship between the pickups

Ordinarily, I'd accept that the theory behind the bypass is that the shorted connection has less resistance than the coil and therefore most of the current will pass through the bypass, the reason I wasn't sure and had to ask was because the coil isn't just a passive component with a high resistance, it's an inductor and the current is generated directly in it when the string moves, so what happens to that current? This is where I get confused.

EDIT: answered while Ehdwuld was doing the same. Yup. That's an alternate mode also, better than your B.

I think it's the same as B, the one described at the beginning is B but bypassing the other coil, the ones in the SD diagram are just swapping the "start" and "finish" for each coil but the same as B otherwise if you know what I mean.

Right, a follow up question if I may:

Which coil would u recommend I have turned on in split mode in each of the 2 pickups and why? Is it to do with where you would have stuck a single coil on the string if, for example, humbuckers had never been invented; or perhaps it's to do with how a slug vs a screw will affect the output?

How long have you been using a GNX3 ? I have had a GNX4 now since 2005/6 and am really impressed with it . :eyecrazy:

I have been using it through my different P . A .s as well as plug it into my different amps ( ss and tube ) , it works so well on all levels . :naughty:

I just got an old Polytone lll/lV/V/M-PA , it's really and eye and ear opener for a mono P . A . with it's 100 watts . The GNX4 really makes this little ole P . A . bark serious stuff . And it is so light weight too :fing2:

What do you plug into and how does the coil splitter FX on the GNX3 to the actual act of splitting coils in real life sound in comparison ? :scratchch

I've only had it bout a year or so
they went on clearance at MF and I picked it up at 149 bucks
I'm kinda digging the recording software

Google " cwenc "
its a free encoder that converts the protracks files to mp3's

haven't used single coil thing yet
actually of the 100 or so options I mainly stay on the
65 Twin model
the Acoustic/Amp model
the Plexi 45
and the Vox ac 15

I have TS-1s on my RG2 and a coil split PP on my RG4
really haven't had a reason to try the model


love the pedal been using it thru a Carvin Bass amp till my Belair got fixed
I don't run it thru the Belair, its a great sounding tube amp already

I like having the drum loops to play to

only wish I could play better
been woodshedding here lately with some bass models and trying to pick up the bass

mostly headphones right now
neighbors and all

My recommendation is to use inner coil in bridge. Why?. Because bridge position is really weak and then, the closer to the center point of vibration that the pickup is, the stronger and natural the signal.

Since hum cancelling occurs with oposite coils (reverse wond, reverse electrical polarity), once you selected inner coil in bridge (slug), you want the outsider in neck (screw). Neck is in a so stronger position that to change to the weaker coil, doesn't really affects too much to the tone.

Have to agree with Hermetico

only caveat is
I think the neck slug coil on my Jazz neck sounds slightly better than the screw coil

but only in a 1 to 1 comparison
and only just slightly less bright ( the way I like em )

if you can't decide wether you want outer or inner coil you can always do like I do

*the killswitch and no tone pot is obviously optional

You don't need a pull/push plus an SPDT on/on for this!!!!
a single SPDT on/OFF/on or a DPDT on/OFF/on is enough!!!

yeah yeah, this is what I had lying around plus I like to have one switch (or push-pull pot) to coil split and another one to select which coil
