Collectible Guitars(scared to play em')

Anybody own a sweet little guitar that you just know is going to go up in value but you told yourself you were going to play it like all the others anyway. Then when you do get it out you are a little nervous with it and feel like you are doing something wrong? It kind of sucks to be honest.

What is the guitar?

I have no scruples whatsoever. I messed with my LP custom, now I'm messing with my Burny.

I only buy pre-dinged guitars, that helps.

Re: Collectible Guitars(scared to play em')

I'm not switching out pickups or the nut or the bridge (most common mods) on my Squier '51.

I just have a feeling that an unmodded Squier '51 will be quite the diamond in the rough one day. I kind of want to get another one so I can mod it. I have one in the most rare color (Vintage Blonde) too so I feel like I have a duty to keep it stock.

I play it though, it's got dings and such, but I'm not going to change the guitar

Re: Collectible Guitars(scared to play em')

Well theres "collectable" and then theres "collectable". A 59 Burst I would not go jumping around stage with at a dive bar gig, nor even take it there. Guitar is worth more than the building and the land it sits on no doubt lol

On the other hand, if its something like a limited run color that was cranked out for Musicians Friend or GC etc, and its "collectable" no I don't care.

Its just never going to be worth near the same as a true vintage collectable.

Even a fairly rare guitar like the Voodoo Strat (which I'm still trying to find for a good price) is never going to go for $100K. yes they sell for about double what they first came out at in 97 or so, but its only going to peak so much.

So as such, I'd have no problem using it as a daily player and thast what I'm buying it for

Re: Collectible Guitars(scared to play em')

my 06 IC400 is going up in price now. ive seen them for $500-$600, and the orignal price i think is $500 or $450 or something...mine was $350 pre dinged. its my #1, and its always going to be on stage until i can find or build another iceman that will sound and play the same. that will never happen:doh::flush:

Re: Collectible Guitars(scared to play em')

I have one old Hamer, it may or may not be worth "collecting" - but it gets babied and hangs in a case, just because I love it and they haven't made them for 15+ years, and they are hard to find used.

Re: Collectible Guitars(scared to play em')

My 1955 Les Paul Custom goes out to gigs. I love the looks of horror and astonishment when someone asks, "is that a real vintage LP Custom?" and I reply yes! Yes it is!

You are the bravest man I know.

Re: Collectible Guitars(scared to play em')

LOL! Nah. I play guitars, not worship them. If I own something that doesn't get played, it gets sold. Speaking of which................

Re: Collectible Guitars(scared to play em')

I bought one of those Gibson guitars-of-the-week Les Pauls... My intention was to keep it as a "collectable" to see if the value would increase. Needless to say, I love to play it, even tho it try not to very often.

I hope it will still be worth something later on. I won't even charge that much for breaking it in for ya...

Re: Collectible Guitars(scared to play em')

I have a 1968 SG standard that I bought new in 1968. Its all original (well I did change the tuners in 1975, but I have the originals). It was my only electric guitar until 1987, so I played the hell out of that guitar. Its in real good shape considering, but it don't look new!

I believe guitars are guitars before they were ever investments. I play mine.

Re: Collectible Guitars(scared to play em')

I had a '59 R.I Les Paul made by the main man himself Mr. Tom Murphy for the NAMM '92 show. I borrowed ALOT of money off my late mum to buy it, and I have to admit to buying it as an investment for my kids later in life. I did get it out occassionally and play it... but I spent more time polishing the .... thing than playing it! Then one time I asked a mate to hold it whilst I answered the phone, came back and he had thrown the strap over standing there with it on. Then... as he took it off I saw his belt buckle... BIG! Yep... big nasty scratch on my beautiful L.P. It took me nearly 5 hours of VERY careful french polishing to get most of it out. Then my mum became very ill and I wanted to make sure my debt was paid before the worst happened, so I sold it. I swore I'd never have another guitar just for furniture.. so all my guitars get played now. This was it, number 8 of 10 to launch the Historic series.....

as awesome as that paul is, gotta say i really hate that flame bro.

This is my strat, my main guitar. Or the only one that is nice enough to be a main guitar. It's a CIJ 03 RI of fender's antigua finish they did in the 70's and also in the 50's. These are very rare. I've not seen many others with the same guitar. I bought it for a cool 500 dollars (US). Im sure i could sell it now for 6 or 7 hundred. And i know it's going to keep going up in value. I have no intention on selling it for a long time, id be a fool to anyway.

That is a very beautiful Strat !

I think who cares because all expensive relic look old and ratty. If you can fetch 25,000 for EVH clone haha! Or 15,000 for Blackie! Play the **** thing until it fall apart and if you get famous your guitar will sell for thousands!

Re: Collectible Guitars(scared to play em')

I have no interest in owning a guitar I wouldn't take to a gig.

I love the color of that strat! And the black pickups / knobs with the color and maple fretboard is nearly mesmorizing. I've never seen a strat like that!

As for whether I have a guitar I have to baby ... unfortunately no, although I take great care of my '99 Gibson Les Paul limited edition.

Re: Collectible Guitars(scared to play em')

if i had some money i'd own some vintage Fender for sure... and old strat is what i'd like... a 1960 strat is going for $30,000 at a Toronto store... i'd like that if i was rich... and i'd really play it...

in real life the only axe i have that has gone up in value at all strange enough is a 76 LP Deluxe... Not that a 76 lp is a collectors item really but the 70's guitars are getting hotter on the market every year..... i bought it when i was a teen in the 80's and it has been thru hell and re-built back to playing condition.... i could easily still sell it it and double my money i spent on it... i don't even really play the thing as the neck is too thick for me otherwise it'd be gigging with it... oneday i've been thinking of trading it in for a new LP that does not hurt my wrist to play it.... for now it sits in my closet...

Re: Collectible Guitars(scared to play em')

d1dsj, that was a beautiful axe!

I'm paranoid with Clone #003, even it's gone through several owners it's still nearly minty fresh and I just adore the Tangerine finish. The rest I just play. I try to be carefull with the necks, one has a ding on the back that's a bit annoying, but the bodies don't concern me too much. (Of course they're all sub 1K axes.)
