i have a combo amp from rocktron that after playing loud for a while, will all of a sudden go completely silent but its still on. if i turn it back on a few min later it works sometimes, but other times i have to bang the top of the amp.

has anyone ever had anything like this happen?

Re: Combo amp randomly silent

since it's a rocktron i figure it's solidsate. Maybe it has something like a heatsensor that shuts it down if it gets too hot from playing too loud or maybe standing too close to a wall.

Re: Combo amp randomly silent

I would geuss cold solder joint. Especially since banging the top of the amp fixes it.

What happens when you wiggle the guitar cable?

Usually, this problem is caused by stepping on your cable and bending the jack.
It cracks the solder where the jack connects to the circuit board, so it cuts out intermittently. If that's the case, take the chassis out and touch a soldering iron to the jack posts to re-melt them. It's pretty easy.

It might be somewhere else on the board,
You basically have to heat the solder where the joint is bad.
