Commissioned a custom clone build last week. NPD pending.

Shipped yesterday and I can't wait to get it. It's basically a DoxaSound King of King's Tone (yup, a KOT clone).

I had it built with my favourite options of the original - 4 jack option, High gain mod on the right side, dip switches moved to an external 3way toggle.

But, not to be satisfied with a straight up clone, I added a feature Analogman doesn't offer. Maybe something like this will come along by the time my name reaches the top of the list. What I had done was to add a second set of clipping diodes on each side selectable by a 2 way toggle. Both sides have the stock KOT diodes and the left side also has the diodes used in the original Marshall Bluesbreaker. The right side has red LED's as its second Diode option.

I can't wait to get it here and try it out. It was ordered Monday, Shipped Yesterday. Here's a few pics I was sent.

Reverb.com. The store is Doxasound. He has a few prebuilt pedals up for sale, but does build to order if you want something else or have a particular modification you want made to a circuit he'll figure out how to pull it off.

Cool! Thanks.
Post up a review once you get it!!!

Re: Commissioned a custom clone build last week. NPD pending.

Will do.

My expectations are high after getting a straight up Timmy clone from him last month. Sounds identical to the real Timmy I sold last winter.

Re: Commissioned a custom clone build last week. NPD pending.

I looked him up on reverb...he's got a few various listings up. My interest is piqued...

Re: Commissioned a custom clone build last week. NPD pending.

This is basically what I ordered minus the secondary clipping diodes. Basically a straight up KOT clone with high gain on the right.

Re: Commissioned a custom clone build last week. NPD pending.

I am not up on the KOT pedals and clones. What's their special thing?

Re: Commissioned a custom clone build last week. NPD pending.

Great as a boost, great as an OD, very stackable. Basically fills a similar role to a Tubescreamer but not a tubescreamer. More transparent compared to a TS. There is a mid bump, but less pronounced and shifted towards the lower mids.

They're a Marshall Bluesbreaker Mk I that was so heavily modded they became their own thing. It's just a really versatile twin OD that sounds very natural and amplike.

i had a kot for a while and it does its thing really well. my favorite tone was the clean boost with the gain up but at my favorite setting it was a huge volume boost if you ran it into a clean amp so it was kinda an always on and id use the other channel to boost it. i ended up trading it to a buddy of mine who was in serious need of a tonal overhaul, hes been using it for years with great success.

seems like your custom pedal should be sweet! id be excited

Re: Commissioned a custom clone build last week. NPD pending.

Are they better with single coils or humbuckers, or are they great with either?

Re: Commissioned a custom clone build last week. NPD pending.

they can be great with both. jim weider plays teles mostly so it was designed around that but its sounds great with a les paul or strat or rg550 too.

Re: Commissioned a custom clone build last week. NPD pending.

Both.

its basically a heavily modified Bluesbreaker pedal. With single coils it gives a nice edge of breakup sort of sound. With humbuckers it get fat and warm and huge sounding without getting too fizzy on the top end. Just the fight amount of fizz.

I've got another dual pedal that has the KOT circuit on one side and a Klone on the other. It sounds incredible. This pedal will probably replace it most times since the circuits each have the capability of being put on their own loop in a pedal switcher. I'll use the other on my pedalboard that has no switcher.

Oh cool, this is good to know. Some ODs sound good with one or the other. I haven't really dove into the fancy-shmancy OD market, but I am always curious as to why one is considered better than another.

Re: Commissioned a custom clone build last week. NPD pending.

The KOT is often referred to as a Transparent OD too. It does has a slight bump to the mids in the lower midrange, but not near as pronounced as a TS. I find it really versatile based on experiences with other clones of the KOT I've tried and my Bluesbreaker Mk 1 clone.

It's dirt is very amplike, and the slight bump of the mids really thickens the sound in my experiences. I actually find I prefer Bluesbreaker based OD's to Tubescreamer style circuits now.

Re: Commissioned a custom clone build last week. NPD pending.

Compared to a Klon type OD, while very different in terms of the character of their dirt, I find the slight bump in the lower mids to be similar.

If I was looking for a pedal to use purely as a clean boost, I'd probably favour a Klon, but the dirt of the KOT is more appealing.

Btw, Klon circuits stack really well with Bluesbreaker based pedals like the KOT. I especially like how my King Klon has the Klone side going into the KOT (or more correctly, POT since it's 1/2 a KOT). With the gain above 1/2 way on the KOT side and the Klone as a clean boost, it can take you from a warm crunch to thick slabs of singing lead tone.

Re: Commissioned a custom clone build last week. NPD pending.

Finally, it's here. Now hopefully work will leave me alone tomorrow so I can try it.

Re: Commissioned a custom clone build last week. NPD pending.

OMG, it sounds amazing.

The difference between the various Diodes is mostly a subtle change in texture, but it's noticeable. Especially on the high gain side where the alternate Diode set is red LED's.

I just might still get the original when my name comes up, maybe get some of the features I didn't get with this one.
