Constant white noise...

I plugged my P90s equipped LP in my Tweaker head + Jettenuator + Iconoclast + Headphone and was greeted with a loud white-like noise, almost as loud as the signal when I started playing. Of all my guitars, this is the one that tends to create some background noises, but this had never been anywhere near this kind of level before.

I had this guitar's wiring fixed at the end of the summer as it had remained silent ever since I fitted the P90s. The tech who did the work said that the pots were a bit degraded, possibly due to low temperature soldering, which I have done in the past as I thought too much heat on the pots was an issue. Could it be that one of the pot is dead?

Re: Constant white noise...

I would certainly have thought of a cold solder join even before having read the content. Dead pots tend not to work typically, but maybe there is a chance of white noise if the the connection fails in a certain way.

Pots tend to fail only with excessive heat. If you have a cold iron ironically you tend to cook the pot as the local area has a chance of transmitting heat a long way through the whole construction before the local area is hot enough. A very hot iron will heat the join area quickly to melt the solder but the energy applied to the pot is low overall.

Some pics might be instructive for diagnosis

Thanks AlexR. I guess the voltmetre will be coming out of its box. Mind you, as I haven't done this kind of things in a while, a pic for visual appraisal by more specialist eyes would be helpful. I'll try to take some tomorrow.
