Constructive Criticism? John Denver "Leavin on a Jet Plane" (vox and acoustic)

Hey yall, any constructive criticism on the singing/guitar/production is much appreciated! First time I have recorded with this acoustic which has been in storage for many years in another state, so I am really digging it.

Me on vocals and guitar singing John Denver "Leavin on a Jet Plane":

Sounds good to me. Voice reminds me a bit of Jon Davis from Korn.

I hear too much tweeter treble on guitar and voice. Being British, the vocal mannerisms in the first verse remind me of Robyn Hitchcock.

I like it.... although I gotta say that, growing up with a mom who was a HUGE John Denver fan, it's weird for me to hear the more modern vocal mannerisms! :D

Nice looking Ovation too... I have three and love 'em! How were you able to stand having it "in storage for many years in another state?" I can't go a week without picking up Holly! (She's my favorite ;))

Nice modern take on a classic folk tune!

Thanks friend! :headbang: I saw Korn about 3 years ago and they killed it! I dig that style of singing.

Good call, thanks for the CC! I am making a few more of these types of videos and will try to avoid making treble spikes when I EQ things. I looked up Robyn, cool stuff! He is very talented, very british, ha!

Thanks so much brutha! :) Glad you dug my take on this song, ya my mom plays this song too. my version sounds different, all I listened to for a long time was like Korn, Marylin Manson, Tool, Alice in Chains, and Stone Temple Pilots. so that is what I do.

wow, killer green guitar dude!

I have a hunch that you may be used to live EQ where you have to make things brighter than usual before the crowd shows up. Crowds of people are great at absorbing high frequencies. ;),

thanks for the listen Twighlight! Beer it could be that not sure, I fiddle with the knobs and so many factors...I just recorded another song today and dialed down the treble a lot:

It is more the lure of the Ovation, I think. When you are playing an Ovation, it is so easy to dial in a very present tone, only to find later that it's really thin in actuality. I like the EQ on my Ovation a lot, and play with a HF boost as well (to me, THAT is the classic 70s Ovation tone -- Heart, Rush, etc). To keep it from getting too zingy, I would suggest using SILK AND STEEL strings. These really tame the harshness/brightness, but can still be amplified. Sonically, they are somewhere between traditional acoustic strings and nylon.

that ovation plugged in is a really thin tone! Twighlight thanks for the comparison to a super famous band and the strings suggestion. I think the strings would help, not sure I am gonna do it just yet. I do like a lot of treble when playing live so that is an issue, and I fat fingered the EQ knobs ;)

Well, I tried my hand at another video today, check it, Zeppelin "tangerine":

Ah different side!
Like your takes...
Hehe yeah total Ovation sound....
Still remember Gilmour playing back then, and I thought what was that?!
Like this stuff you do here!

So much reverb. So much piezo.
Try recording the guitar acoustically with a nice mic (or two). it'll sound 100% better.
Piezos are purely a necessary evil for live work to get a consistent proximity output and less feedback. The tradeoff is the horrible plasticy sound.
Seeing is you are at home, you have the luxury of using a nice mic.

Your vocals sound like a mix between peter garrett and robert smith.

cool brutha! Glad you dug my stuff, Ill have to listen to those Peter / Robert tunes more, cheers :beerchug:

great suggestions on this forum. Gibson, yours helped a ton too! I tried yours and ya, no wonder. I ran out and bought another used SM58 stat! I was trying to polish that piezo recording but it just ain't happening. drenching it with reverb/delay was not helping and was turning into a really obvious effect. the piezo just was not capturing my guitar like I heard it, but my used SM58 does, sounds amazing compared to that piezo. Ill post another thread with my results.

Thanks yall! :beerchug:

here is "house of the rising sun" with the used sm58 I just bought; it sounds pretty much like the guitar sounds to me now:
