Contacting a luthier.

How do I find a list of luthiers around my area?? I honestly do NOT trust Guitar Center to handle my guitar in any way, not after what they did to my friend's guitar. He sent his epiphone Ace Les Paul in for a set-up and it started buzzing. He went back and they couldn't fix the problem, so they sent it to epiphone for an exchange. Epiphone sent the same guitar back, saying that the problem was fixed, but there is still buzzing all around the fretboard. The only way to prevent this is for the action to be sky high! Terrible... His guitar was fine before that set-up.

So anyone? :smack:

you can easily learn to do it yourself online. Check out frets.com. They've got a boatload of info, and all of it is useful. Most GC's send their work out to a local luthier, since most there no more than salesmen.

Well that sounds like either a loose tuner or other part or a warped neck with to much back bend on your friends guitar.

Call your local guitar shops, they can recommend someone if you are not comfortable doing your own setup.

I am a luthier!!! Knowing its an Epi it could probally use a good fret leveling/good setup!!!!! PM me if interested!!

I know an excellent one is Staten Island if that's not too far for you.

I would recommend going to a vintage guitar dealer in NJ. They usually have a number of guys that can do this tyoe of repair. I think Theodie is right a good fret level and setup sounds like what the EPI needs!

Whatever the remote diagnosis a good tech will not undertake to set up your guitar without first talking to you about your style, preferences, preferred strings, tuning etc.

At least half of the equation is the way you play and it's impossible for even the best tech to second guess this, so expect to have to take your guitar along, discuss your requirements with the man who is doing the work, not a salesman and expect that he will give you the opportunity to try it out and raise any issues before you take your guitar away, but expect to be told if your expectations are unreasonable. Expect also to have to pay for this because to a professional repairer time is literally money.

I am often asked to deliver "super low action but with no fret buzz". I answer that I can make them a chili and custard sandwich as well, but i can't be responsible for how it tastes, and that I can set the action as low as they want it if they are prepared to play the guitar within those parameters.

Good post!!!! Some Players have unreal expectations for how low the action can be without buzzing!!!!! I have gone through this a number of times with customers. They always look at you funny when you tell them that it is not possible sometimes!!! Granted, an Epiphone could be improved over the out of the box condition!

Once again, Killer post!!!!!! That was actually going through my mind!!!!!
