Converting a fretted neck to fretless

How difficult a job is converting a fretted neck to fretless for a luthier?

Is it worth the bother in terms of the work involved or is simply replacing a fretted neck with a fretless neck (with lines) likely a cheaper option?

Probably cheaper to buy a used fretless neck. As far as new is concerned, expect to pay about the same for a good lined fretless neck, as you would for having a fretted neck converted by a competent luthier. Despite what a lot of self-appointed experts might think, it's not easy to do it right.

Thanks--this is very useful and as suspected.

I have an '87 MIJ Squier Jazz that I modified (SDs, Gotoh 201 bridge, series-parallel switching) that I really like, but which is a bit obsolete for me since I put together a MIM Fender Jazz. Converting it to fretless is something I've been toying with.

I did some searching for a fretless Fender Jazz neck and there don't seem to be many out there. I know a fretless MIM Fender Jazz is pretty cheap these days, but I don't want another bass.

I had an unlined fretless Affinity Jazz Bass for awhile (made in Indonesia). Played great after I replaced the stock nut. It was made of hard cheese and was high as a cats' back.

Perhaps look in Warmoth's showcase...I've seen them there from time to time.

Yes--that's a good idea--thanks. I checked yesterday (I have a Warmoth Tele bass and the AAA Birdseye maple neck is outstanding).

They have a couple of ready-made fretless Jazz necks that are OK, though not exactly what I'd order.

Stratosphere has a '62 RI Precision neck with tuners that I'd consider.

I'm sure it'd fit the pocket, but I don't know if the authorities would cite me for putting a P neck on a J bass. :drill:

I put a left-handed all maple Tele bass neck on a Jazz once for a client. The overwhelming reaction was "COOL!".

I love Tele bass necks--that must have indeed been very cool.

I'm on the wrong side of town so to speak when it comes down to playing the bass, but from what I know, just buy a new cheap neck for like 30 or forty bucks on Amazon.

Edit: Googled "fretless bass neck", for that price, build your own bass
