Cool Idea? Humbucker with Quarter Pounder slugs.

I'm just thinking out loud. :laugh2: Wouldn't it be cool to see a humbucker with Quarter Pounder-sized coils? I know Anderson already does something similar, but I'd love to hear SD's version.

Re: Cool Idea? Humbucker with Quarter Pounder slugs.

Hmm, i think the Invader is a humbucker which comes close to this idea.
What about a quarter pounder Stag Mag?

Re: Cool Idea? Humbucker with Quarter Pounder slugs.

Might be cool to see a pup with a set of fixed pole pieces from the quarter pound and a set of adjustable poles from an invader.

Re: Cool Idea? Humbucker with Quarter Pounder slugs.

I'd be tempted to see a list of Seymour's "bad ideas;" combinations of existing parts, or variations on existing models that he's messed around with and decided were just ill conceived. I mean, if he's even half as in love with what he does as we imagine him to be, then I have to think that he's tried some of this stuff in the past. And while his judgment on the validity of the experiment woudl by no means be the final word in the matter, I'd still be interested to see even a partial list of stuff he's tried that just didn't work.

Re: Cool Idea? Humbucker with Quarter Pounder slugs.

That would be fun to read, but I can see how SD might not want to release all their R&D to their competitors. Let them find out for themselves. :laugh2:

However, I'm curious as to what happened to the Stra-90 idea. I haven't seen anything about it since its first announcement by Evan here quite some time ago.

As far as I know the Strat-90 is a custom shop pickup, all you have to do is pickup the phone and order one from MJ.

Hm, i think the SH-5, SH-11, SH-14, SH-2, SH-12 are variations of one existing model (the SH-1)

And there are some pickups which disappered:
The A-5 (Stag) Mag, the Silverbird SH-9...
This just makes curious if these pickups have been bad...which also let them be interesting...

Re: Cool Idea? Humbucker with Quarter Pounder slugs.

While the SH-5, SH-11 and SH-14 are certainly variations on a single design, I'm not sure about those others. To me, it's only a variation on a single design if only ONE variable is altered. Alter two things and you've got a new design. But insofar as all of those models are in various ways related to PAF-type sounds, I guess I see what you're saying...but I don't really see how that might negate my earlier point. I still think it would be interesting to hear Seymour's thoughts on vaome of his "failed" experiments, but Artie's point about R&D is a really good reason why we'll never see anything like that.

When did the Stag Mag disappear? Its still on the website!

Re: Cool Idea? Humbucker with Quarter Pounder slugs.

This is the Stag Mag SH-3 with staggered A-II rods.
But there once was a Pickup called "The Mag" with flat A-5 rods.

Re: Cool Idea? Humbucker with Quarter Pounder slugs.

I've wanted to hear one of these for a while! The slugs are going to sound different than the allen screws, the allen screws are also bigger than 1/4"

Just a bump for "The Mag", an awesome pickup that everyone should buy. It's a very LOUD pickup up, but not in a distortion way. Just loud and clear, like a cranked Fender Bassman. Distorted tone is just woman-tone heaven. Oh, and always use it in the neck position. In the bridge, it's very trebley and thin. But I'd bet it nail Neil Young's tone in a Les Paul.
