Cool little recording trick

for those of us with no money, no line out in our amp, no mic, and the desire to record (albeit awful quality) here is something i just used. Plug a pair of headphones into the computer's mic, and use sound recorder, or the software of your choice. ipod earbuds dont seem to work, but some other headphones do. Quality is bad, but at least ur recording. Maybe this is old and has been done, but i just discovered it. Its cool waht u can do with a few y-jacks aiming at different parts of an amp, or dropping a headphone into the soundhole of an acoustic...

yeah, headphones and mics work on the same principle, the moving coil/diaphragm (I still can't spell that word).

if you reversed the polarity of the signal you could actually talk into a speaker and hear it through a mic. I don't recommend this though, it sounds like crap plus you can damage the mic. But it comes in handy in those mcguyver situations.

Re: Cool little recording trick

or, just get a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter at radioshack for a couple of bucks, and plug your guitar right into your computer!

If you have software like apple's garageband you can even simulate amp sounds and do multitrack recording that sounds pretty decent!

Re: Cool little recording trick

that same thing works with a mic ^^^^ you can just mic your amp and run it straight to garageband or anything else

Re: Cool little recording trick

I have used a cheap AIWA mic ($9.99). It's sort of a condensor mic. I just stick it in front of an amp and then into a cheap Behringer mixer. From there you can go into a computer or CD burner. I'll be getting an SM57 mic soon, but it's still fun to start cheap. If you have an old boombox (radio) with a cassette deck and a built in mic, you can do some lo-fi tapes on that just by pressing the play and record button.

for a very interesting experiment, connect 2 speakers together (+ to -, + to -) and lay them cone up. put something small like screws or something on one of the cones. now tap on the other speaker. it'll cause the screws to jump.

When I did some samples for the Toneninja website, I used a small mic that's meant to attach to your jacket or shirt if you're giving a lecture. I used the computers sampler and mic'd the amp from a distance and it came out pretty well. Eventually I'll get real software and a decent mic, but until then, this works.
