Cool New Line6 Toy

Re: Cool New Line6 Toy

Lemme clear up, I don't have one, but I think they are gonna be a hot item.

I'm already taking pictures of my mic pre and in/out card for eBay. For PC recordists, this looks like a great product.

Those are really cool. Unfortunately I'm hooked on the ProTools, and I already have a PodXT, so they are no good to me. They are definitely great for the average guitarist who wants to record themselves.

Re: Cool New Line6 Toy

I noticed the "vocals" section... is there anything on the market that will do this live for vocals?

Re: Cool New Line6 Toy

This thing definitely doesn't replace having good effects, amps, modellers, etc. since it ties you forever to your PC, but for what it does, and for what it costs, I'm not sure it has any real competition. $200 for a dual channel mic preamp/audio card plus a bunch of models and effects? My Roland UA-30 was $200 back when I bought it in 2001. My Mic Preamp was $200. My V-Amp was...okay, $60 used, but still...

Seems to me that the real star here is the software, not the box. They should make this as a plugin to existing multitrack recording software. I'm not sure how useful or intuitive it will be as just another link in the recording chain. But as a plugin that fits nicely into an already established digital recording workflow it would be great.

AMS and MF are listing the UX1 (single channel; no phantom power for mics, no level monitoring) for $129 and the UX2 for $199.

Very cool. It looks like the next generation of the GuitarPort. The software works well and the interface is ultra easy to work with. I’m not a huge fan of the rifftracker software (works fine for what it is, but you can’t easily lay down an entire track without splitting it up) but it looks like they’ve included a new recording package in the software.

The only issue I have with the GuitarPort/RiffTracker combo is that the computer is simultaneously modeling your tone, keeping time, and laying down pre-recorded drums tracks. Even on my high powered laptop, latency becomes an issue when recording multiple tracks. If I had to do it over again, I think I would have moved to a more traditional digital based recording software and used a POD for the modeling. But, for someone short on cash and living in an environment where noise can be a concern, I do not think you can beat the PC packages Line 6 is selling.
