Cool Punk/Metalish sound

Hey just wondering if anyone knows what pickups the band Story of the Year uses they have a really fat punk/metal sound which I'd love to get!?!?

Re: Cool Punk/Metalish sound

I have no idea what pick-ups they use, but I would suggest the Duncan Distortion to get that kind of sound.

Re: Cool Punk/Metalish sound

I know Phil uses a PRS Custom 22, and I think he has the stock pickups in. But I agree with Kac, I think a Ducan Distortion would get you that sound.

Re: Cool Punk/Metalish sound

JB or Custom would probably work, too. You can cop the tone of most modern bands with a Distortion, JB or Custom pretty well.

Re: Cool Punk/Metalish sound

Another punk rocker :)

Okay, here's the combination that you will literally get the best sound. JB bridge and Jazz/Invader in the neck. The duncan invader is awesome, except it's cleans aren't exactly jaw dropping. The invader can get the job done for solos if you got a decent tone out of your amp. On the other hand, a JB can do pretty much anything. Get the JB, it's a better version of a DD.

EDIT: If you want a fat, thick tone, get an invader. It's an awesome pickup. Either an invader or a JB, if you can, both :)

I'm glad there was another punk rocker on the furom to settle this one :13:
:laugh2: I guess I better stick to the metal stuff, cuz I would never but a Jb in the bridge and Invader in the neck of any guitar.
Oh well, Rock On:smoker:

Re: Cool Punk/Metalish sound

I've never heard Story of the Year, so I can't comment on them (though, I will say they have a silly name).

For punk I've always favored the Duncan JB and DiMarzio Super Distortion.

Re: Cool Punk/Metalish sound

that band sucks , you need to start listening to black sabbath son!

no offense

Re: Cool Punk/Metalish sound

i can help with this...my band plays a mix of metal/punk my guitar sound is very metal but the songs are more punk with a metal influence...kinda like Story does and i guess SUM 41 even...anyway before i can even try to answer the question...what type of guitar are you using and what wood is the body made of and what wood are the neck and fingerboard made of? is it a string through body or stoptail or does it have a tremolo of some sort? also your amp will play a big part in getting that sound...what amp do you play through?

Re: Cool Punk/Metalish sound

im not sure what they sound like, but liek every one said g with a distortion for a fatter sound. Perosnally i think it would be really cool if these punk abnds started using vintage oriented equipment! Im sure tis been done but ya....

Re: Cool Punk/Metalish sound

Hey again yer Im using a Ibanez RG370 which is basswood with a rosewood fret board. My amp is a Fender FM65 and Im also using a Ibanez 100w stack (not sure what model) I ended up gettin the JB for the bridge but I might get a DD for the neck if it can achieve a simliar sound??

Re: Cool Punk/Metalish sound

I was thinking of the invader in the neck or the jazz in the neck. If you want it! I'm not sure how it'll sound with a JB in the bridge. Post here for help! :)

EDIT: The Invader gives a thick tone, distorted wise, cleans are awesome with the JB, the distortion/palm mutes is mouth watering with the invader!

Re: Cool Punk/Metalish sound

Hey guys I ended up gettin the JB in the bridge n it sounds awesome and has just the sound I was lookin for! The clean is crystal clear and im running it though a Boss MT-2 Metal Zone and sounds chunky without being to hardcore or too tinny. It was concerning me that the DD through the Metal Zone might make it loose that punky sound. I reckon when I get some more cash ill have to invest in a DD for the neck though!!

P.S A fat Mesa stack would be nice too...one day maybe
