Cornford Hurricane (or DRRI?)

Ok, so my 7 weeks of summer job is about to end, and my poor hands will be full of cash. My amp purchase is approaching.

After long times of considerations, I'm left with basically two options: a new DRRI and a new speaker and new tubes, or a used Cornford Hurricane.

I play mostly soft rock/classic rock, and I need good cleans and mild overdriven tones at band practice level.

I've learnt alot about the DRRI recently, but I don't know much about the Cornford, beside the fact that it suits my needs (good cleans and overdrive at low/medium volum).

So, can anyone tell me something about the Cornford Hurricane?

Re: Cornford Hurricane (or DRRI?)

The Hurricane is only 20 watts and single-channel. I woudn't expect much clean headroom with anything than a 'less-than-polite' drummer, but the the quality of the gain sounds are amazing. Check out the Cornford website for some clips.

My guitar teacher had a Harliquin which was only 6 watts but it sure could rattle the windows in the shop. And the tone was out of this world.

Well if the Harlequin is its baby brother, then I say go for it. I have a song done by some solo guitarist using the Harlequin, and it does sound beautiful. I can find the song if you would like to hear it.

I don't know anything about the Cornford amps, but I own a 67 Deluxe Reverb. IMO you may be better off shopping around and see if you can get an early SF Deluxe. They are the same circuita s the BF, but are quite a bit cheaper. I have seen them advertised for less than $1000. As long as it has a good quality speaker your in. They will definatley sound better than the RI and they are going to be more dependable. The BFRI is a really good amp...... I just feel that the real deal is better.

Cornford are to my ears the best amps ive ever heard, i played a US telecaster through a Hurricane at a shop.. that was about 2 years ago and no matter how many amps i own or play nothing has to me sounded as good as that, if i could have any amp id choose a cornford, probably a Hellcat.

oh and yes they can go loud, very loud.
the only thing i dont like about cornford is the fact that i cant afford one. :D

That would be nice...

Here in Norway, amps tend to cost maybe 1,5 times the price in USA. But when it comes to Cornford, they're about the same price. So Cornford is in fact a quite cheap boutique amp here. Halleluja.
