Re: COst for new leads
I had to do this to two pickups. I first started by trying to extend the leads with 4 conductor cable, but the area where the new wires were soldered on turned out to be too thick to fit through the little holes while running the wire to the control cavity. So I decided to extend the leads at the coils. If you remove the fabric tape and look at a Duncan humbucker, there are small wires coming out of the coils, and the 4 conductor cable is soldered on to those wires. So rather than extend, I remove and replace the 4 conductor wire. The bad thing is that disassembling the pickup like this is that you may need to repot it when you're done. If you need to extend it a lot, that's a good method, provided you get a good solder connection. If you just need an inch, get some 4 conductor cable, remove the wires, and solder them on as an extension.
