I tried it on a flying v once, and the upper strap screw, behind the neck joint, was too long. the screw stook out and i was forced to uninstall it.

im asking because i might get an SG soon, i just wanted to know if i would have the same problem, since the SG also has the screw back there. thanks.

Just use the screw that comes with the stock strap buttons, because anything longer will go through the fretboard. I've done the same with absolutely no problems... I just hope you didn't sell the V because of that.

NO WAY bro.

just for reference, i cant tighten the screw too much right, since it doesnt have that smooth part for the clip to move freely?

I'm not sure what you mean, my experience is with Schaller straplocks and the screw that came with those was so long it would stick about an 1/8 of an inch out of the fretboard if used. I used the longer screw on the butt end of the guitar but the shorter stock screw on the neck joint since nothing else will work with an SG.

im talking about a dimarzio cliplok, the screw has the threads at the beginning, closer to the head of the screw, its smooth, no threads, so the strap clip can slide,

Go to the hardware store and get the appropriate screw.

I'm not familiar with the Dimarzio cliplok but that screw sounds pretty standard for all strap buttons...

All you need to do is figure out what # wood screw you need and how long you need, will cost you under $1

If you stick with the stock screw, I'd glue it for some added security.

so uyou guys are suggesting i get a screw the same width, that will work...

I've put Schaller strap locks on my SG's with no problems. The screws aren't too long. Why not get a Schaller & not have to fool around trying to get a screw with a head that will fit low enough?

By the way, if the old screw hole is too wide for the straplock screw, don't do what I've seen some idiots do, and drill a new one. Just partially fill the old hole with a toothpick or two (break them off flush) with a drop of wood glue. A smaller diameter screw will fit nice & snug.

Again I'm not familiar with the Dimarzio cliplok, but the consensus on this forum from previous threads has been that the Schallers are currently the best product.

Re: Could i install a DiMarzio cliplok strap on an SG with no problems?

If I remember correctly the reason was that the Schaller has both the plunger (the locking mechanism, basically) and also the cup that the strap button fits in to. This way if the locking mechanism fails the guitar will be held by the strap button sitting in the cup.

I believe the Dunlop (in case you're interested) was faulted because the locking mechanism is known to fail, and has no back up in that case. The design holds the strap further away from the body of the guitar, meaning the screw is more prone to loosening over time.

I have the Schaller in two of my guitars now, and I have no complaints.

Both the Dunlop and the Schaller are better than nothing.

The fault of the Schaller as far as wear is VERY noticable. Every time you put the strap on, if the wear area is getting thin, you're going to notice it, and it's unlikely to happen terribly quickly.

Anything other than that and I can make them totally infallible by gluing the posts into the body and using Loc-Tite on the threads to keep the strap attached to the receptor piece.

+1 for Schallers.

I have them on all my guitars now. Thats about 12 pairs without a single failure. Never had a guitar fall or even a loose screw.

I've tried the Dunlops and had 1 fail on me within the first year with light usage. Stay away from the dunlops.

BTW - I have 3 SG's all equipped with Schallers. Not a single problem.
