could my wiring be screwed?

Just put a new pickup in a Paul style guitar and one of the pickups just sounds too dark. I don't know if I have the wiring messed up or if the thing is just low. This may sound like a dumb question but....isn't the treble selection the neck and the rhythm selection the bridge? This is the first time I have put a pickup into a guitar and have another question....will the pickup distance from the strings affect it? The new one sits away from the strings and the old one we replaced was really close, perhaps too close. BTW the pickup I added was the Tremonti treble and the other one is a Dimarzio X something or the other, It will be replaced with an alnico II pro soon. HELP... :yell: :smack:

on a LP type, 'rhythm' is the neck and 'treble' is the bridge ...

as for adjusting pickup height, yes, height will effect volume and tone alot .. here's how to adjust it

For the bridge pickup - put a nickel ($0.05) on top of the pickup under the high E string and play the highest note on that string.

Adjust the height on that side of the pickup till the string touches the nickel.

Repeat the same with the low E string, but use two nickels on top of each other.

If this gives you too much output, you can reduce the height slightly.



to figure out which pup is being selected by the 3-way toggle, tap lightly on it with a screwdriver with the amp at a low volume .. you'll definitely know which pup is selected when you tap on the pup

I think you may have your pups reversed. Traditionally, in an L.P. guitar, the rhythm pup is near the neck, while the bridge pup is, well, closer to the bridge. It will make a HUGE difference in tone if you move your pups closer to the strings. Try putting the pups about 1/8 to 3/32 under the strings, and see what happens.

Once again you guys are the greatest. I will try the nickel idea. Are the Dimarzio's THAT dark? I kinda like the sound I get from them, but they have no tone whatsoever. Can't play them clean, too much bottom end, the Duncans should fix it though.
