Could you coax a Vai tone out of a 5150?

Re: Could you coax a Vai tone out of a 5150?

If Steve Vai plugged his guitar into a 5150, I guarantee you that what would come out of the speakers would sound exactly like Steve Vai.:)

Could I plug my guitar into a 5150 and sound like Steve Vai? No.

I don't think so. The Carvin legacy is a bit loose on the bottom end and is very smooth and liquidy(if you have a better word for it tell me). The 5150 is dry, crunchy and pretty tight. Both those amps are very different from each other and without buying tons of pedal i guess there's no use trying to get vai out of a 5150. Note also that the 5150 is IIRC a 6L6 amp and the Legacy is EL 34 which also makes a lot of difference. And to get Vai's sound you'd defintely need his sig pups, since all of them sound pretty unique and probably play an important role in his tone.

I'm sure sticking his massive rack setup between your guitar and the amp would help some too ;).

+1. Aside from the difference in player and I guess the general amp structure/tube differences, using all of that gear would totally get you closer to his tone.

Guys... for his basic tone, he really doesn't use that much rack gear. The majority of it is a nice delay/reverb with a distortion pedal into a tube amp.

What was really a revealation for me was that I found I needed to back off on the gain to get something close to his sound....so much of his tone truly is his fingers.

When I met him a few years ago I asked him to hold his hand up to mine; I wanted to see how much larger his hands were. He had about 1/2 an inch on the fingertips. It was enough for me to feel I could resign from trying to sound like him without admitting defeat.

:) 100% true. everyone's trying to sound like their favorite player.
number one: that's not what music is about. lyricly it's art, it's creativity, it's expressing yourself. instrumently: it's expressing yourself just in a different way!
number 2: you should have your sound, sure it can be influenced by other artists but don't copy. that's atleast what i try to do when i try to create a song. even if you're doing a cover put your own spin on it.

however much variety music holds, at the center of each song there is a reason the song was created, even if it sounds like a silly song. they probably were high-spirited at the time. each song has a meaning: wether it's deep or not so deep

peace out

hehe, i dont want to hear that i should have my own sound, i just want to know if a 5150 can produce a sound in that territory ;) thanks for the replies so far guys :) Is a jsx similar to a 5150? If so, i reckon it should be able to get there perhaps?

Eddie Van Halen's 5150 amp is a copy of a Soldano. And the Peavey speakers for the 5150 are copies of Celestion Vintage 30's. Steve Vai's Legacy amp is a copy of a Marshall and the speakers for it are Celestion Vintage 30's. So, the 5150 is a Soldano & the Legacy is a Marshall. With this information you can get an idea on whether you can get the sound your looking for or not.

The JSX is like a slightly tamer, more refined, more trebly 5150.

No, the Sheffields are based on Greenbacks with higher wattage.

I wish i could find a 5150 to snag on UK ebay :damnit:

Re: Could you coax a Vai tone out of a 5150?

I have a legacy half stack and it's very easy to get vai'ish tones with just the guitar plugged straight in.

Vai's tone is in his fingers. My other guitarist has a Legacy half stack. Sounds nothing like Vai.

While I agree that a large part of his tone is in his fingers, the basic tone is all in that Legacy. I'm pretty sure that if I plugged an Ibanez RG or a similar guitar with DiMarzio pickups into a Legacy half-stack and played with the settings a bit I could easily find a Vai-like tone in there. Perhaps not a perfect Vai but close.
