Covered C8?

Rumbling

New member
My main hard rock Les Paul currently has an uncovered C8 in the bridge and I am thinking about swapping it into an ebony Les Paul with a covered 59 in the neck. I want to cover the C8 to match the 59 but have a few questions I am hoping you guys can help me answer. Since the C8 is fairly high output I would probably need to have it wax potted to reduce potential microphonic squeal correct? How much difference in tone....small loss of treble? Which pickup covers would I need?

Thanks in advance!
Michael

Re: Covered C8?

You'd lose a little highs, but nothing that can be remedied by raising the pole pieces.

wax potting the cover is a wise choice, but since the hard part of wax potting is already tone (aka: potting of the coils) all you just need is a bit of wax between the bobbins and the cover. so, what I do is drizzle a bit of wax in the cover, press in the pickup, put a soldering iron on top of the cover and press the pickup deeper in the wax that's melting. excess will drip out, so you're being left with as little wax as needed. might take a bit practice, though?

the covers that fit best are the ones that duncan sells.

Re: Covered C8?

I just put masking tape over the slugs on mine. It sounds better covered IMO though. But i was actually begining to wonder if the coils are wax potted myself.. even my Stock CC (never had mag swapped or cover removed) feedbacks much more than my other pickups do...

Re: Covered C8?

I love the C8 with the 59n. I use an A4 in the 59. The cleans in the middle position with those pickups is just amazing. I like the 59 with the A5. I just like the A4 a little better.

mine are both covered. just make sure you push the cover on tight when you put it on and you should be fine. make sure the poles come up through the holes on the cover as much as possible.
